Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 555

Hearing the answer he’d been hoping for, Dennis Williams grinned. “You said it, not me…”

Camila Davis pressed her face to his chest, eyes closed.

She’d used up every ounce of energy just to speak, and now, feeling the warmth and safety of his arms, she finally relaxed. Leaning into Dennis, she drifted, halfway to sleep.

Dennis watched her, thinking she looked adorable. He reached up and gently poked her cheek.

Right now, Camila was like some sleepy kitten, too tired to protest, just letting him tease her.

His gaze softened, growing more tender as he looked at her.

After a moment, he brushed a stray lock of hair from her face.

When she was quiet like this, Camila looked so sweet—delicate, beautiful.

Her cheeks were flushed from the wine, making her look even more lovable.

Dennis pressed his lips together, clearly holding back.

A few seconds passed, and finally he couldn’t resist the urge any longer. He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.

His voice was low, earnest: “Camila Davis, whether you meant what you said tonight or you were just tipsy, you said it—and I’m holding you to it.”

And he’d never let her back out.

When they’d first met, Dennis hadn’t thought much of it—he’d only been interested in Lillian’s health.

Back then, she was still married, and he had no interest in playing the homewrecker.

But the more time they spent together, the more he saw what made her special.

Others might have missed it, but he saw her clearly. He couldn’t help being drawn in, admiring her more and more.

He hated to see her upset, hated when she got hurt. He wanted to protect her.

After her divorce, he finally let himself follow his heart.

And when it came to his feelings for her, Dennis never tried to hide them.

Camila didn’t respond. Her weight was pressed against him, breathing slow and steady—she really had fallen asleep.

He picked her up gently, laying her down on the bed with all the care in the world.

She didn’t so much as stir.

Dennis stood there a moment, watching her sleep, until a sound from the hallway made him turn and head out.

Susan had just finished giving Lillian her bath and came over to see if Dennis needed any help.

Seeing him step out of the bedroom, she asked, “Is Ms. Davis alright? Should I get her some aspirin for her hangover?”

Dennis shook his head. “No need. She’s out cold—best not to wake her.”

Susan nodded, dropping the subject.

Just then, a little figure darted over and wrapped herself around his leg, looking up at him with big pleading eyes. “Daddy, are you leaving again tonight?”

Dennis scooped her up.

Fresh from her bath, Lillian smelled sweet and clean, her tiny hands clutching his shirt, her pajamas covered in cartoon puppies.
