"Really?"
Even though Camila Davis said it, Walter Wilson couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it.
He didn’t know if his worries were justified or just his own paranoia.
But that guy—well, even Walter had to admit he was a real contender. And it was obvious he meant more to Camila than just a regular friend.
She was an incredible woman. Like a pearl that had been hidden away for too long, finally catching the light for everyone to see. Who wouldn’t be drawn to her?
Camila noticed something off in Walter’s expression. She looked him in the eye and asked, “So… you don’t support me?”
Before Walter could answer, she quickly added, a little apologetically, “Sorry, I know I’m not exactly the world’s best business partner. But this opportunity at the research institute is huge. They’re only taking a handful of people. If I want to grow, I can’t let this pass me by.”
Her eyes were clear and determined, full of ambition and drive. There was no hidden agenda.
Walter felt something stir inside him, seeing how serious she was.
He knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
But… Camila was really going to Cabinda.
He’d still be stuck in Harrisburg, and it wasn’t like he could just hop on a train and see her whenever he wanted. Once she left, the distance between them would be real.
Would there even be a “them” anymore?
For a fleeting moment, Walter wanted to just say it. To tell her all the feelings he’d been bottling up for ages.
But when he opened his mouth, he stopped himself.
No. Not now.
If he blurted everything out, he might just scare her off—and Camila would probably run a mile.
It could even ruin what they already had.
Not yet… It’s not time.
Walter tried to calm himself down.
After a long, awkward silence, he finally spoke. “If this is what you want, of course I support you. And don’t worry about The Smith Group—I’ll look after things here. I can’t help much with the research institute, though, so I’ll need you to keep an eye on things when you can. Unless… you want to set up a new lab in Cabinda? It could be small, just something for emergencies. You can bring some of your team from Harrisburg if you want.”
Camila hadn’t expected Walter not only to support her but to take the initiative with suggestions.
She couldn’t help but smile. “If we can do that, it’d be perfect!”
Walter watched her light up with happiness, but only he knew how bittersweet he felt inside.
