Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 568

But Sarah Brown was still fuming, practically steaming with anger. Without a second thought, she grabbed her phone and called her brother.

Because she’d already agreed to her brother’s one-sided deal, Sarah spoke with confidence, not even bothering to hide her irritation. “You’ve been digging for days—have you found anything yet? What’s the story with Sandra Taylor in Europe?!”

Billy Brown, ever the calm one, answered coolly, “Not yet. The woman you asked me to look into is a real piece of work. Most of her records are sealed, so it’s taking longer than usual.”

Sarah groaned, “Oh come on, can’t you hurry it up? Don’t make me keep chasing you about this.”

Billy was honestly surprised to hear his usually chill sister so worked up. “What did she do to you? You sound like you’ve got a personal vendetta.”

Sarah snorted, “It’s not just about me. She’s the absolute worst…”

Realizing Billy still didn’t know about what happened to Camila Davis, Sarah quickly filled him in. By the end of her rant, her anger was back in full force.

“I swear, that woman just can’t stay out of trouble. After wrecking Camila’s marriage, she’s still got the nerve to go after her, again and again. And now she’s actually invited Camila to her own engagement party. That’s just sick!”

Billy hadn’t known any of this. But he’d met Camila before, back when she and Sarah were inseparable—they’d all had dinner together, and he’d always liked her.

Honestly, he almost thought of Camila as family.

He hadn’t realized so much drama had gone down over the years.

Billy’s brow furrowed as he said, “Alright, I’ll put some extra guys on it. I’ll get you answers ASAP.”

“Good!” Sarah finally felt satisfied.

Camila, meanwhile, had no clue about any of this. She’d tossed the engagement invitation in the trash and moved on.

A few days later, she went to Lillian’s school to arrange her withdrawal.

Lillian had been at the school for ages; she’d grown attached to her teachers and classmates. Suddenly having to leave was tough—she really didn’t want to say goodbye.

She spent all morning hugging friends and lingering in the classroom, unable to bring herself to walk out.

One of the teachers, watching from the door, felt a pang of sympathy and turned to Camila. “How about we throw Lillian a little going-away party?”

Lillian’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. She tugged at Camila’s sleeve, “Mommy, can we? I want to get gifts for my friends…”

Of course Camila wouldn’t rain on her daughter’s parade.

There were still a few days before their move to Cape Cod, so she agreed right away.

Lillian took the whole thing very seriously. On Saturday, Camila took her to Target, and Lillian didn’t need any help—she picked out a different present for each classmate, based on what she knew they liked.

That afternoon, Camila was headed to the lab for some last-minute paperwork. Lillian’s party was set for later, so Camila asked Sarah and Susan, “Can you two take Lillian to the school? I’ll meet you there after I’m done.”

Sarah had already wrapped up her work. She’d gotten a few days off, thanks to her brother, to help Camila with the move to Cape Cod.

Around noon, Sarah packed Lillian into the car and set off for the school.

But as soon as they left their neighborhood, something unexpected happened.

A couple of big guys in suits stepped out and blocked their car.

It was the Smith family’s security team.

They surrounded the car, making it clear they weren’t letting them go anywhere.

Sarah rolled down the window, glowering. “You guys bored or something? Move, or I swear I’ll put my foot through the gas!”

The head bodyguard said, expressionless, “We’re under Mrs. Smith’s orders. We’re here to escort Lillian to the hotel for Mr. Smith’s engagement ceremony. Please hand her over.”

And before Sarah could even react, the men yanked the doors open and pulled Lillian from the car.
