“If she’s ready, she can come over anytime.”
Hearing this, Camila Davis couldn’t help but laugh. “You’ve got everything sorted out already? Then what’s left for me to do?”
Dennis Williams looked at her, a hint of something deeper glinting in his gaze. His voice dropped low, almost conspiratorial. “I just wanted to make sure everything was perfect. That way, you’d have nothing to complain about—and maybe you’d actually want to stay.”
As he said this, Dennis suddenly took two long strides forward.
Before Camila could react, his arm slipped around her waist and he pulled her against him.
Startled, she looked up and found herself gazing right into his eyes.
His handsome face was so close, she could smell the crisp scent of pine and fresh winter air clinging to him. It was all around her, heady and comforting.
Their bodies pressed together, she could feel the heat radiating off him.
Everything about him—the scent, the warmth, the nearness—seemed to seep into her, intoxicating and impossible to resist.
Her heart thudded wildly in her chest.
It felt like her blood was boiling, racing through her veins, but her body was frozen in place, too tense to move.
Then Dennis leaned down, his breath warm against her ear. “Camila, I’m really glad you’re here in Cabinda.”
His embrace wasn’t tight, but there was a seriousness to it—a kind of quiet promise.
Camila let her cheek rest against his shoulder, and the anxiety that had been twisting inside her all night seemed to finally settle, as if a large, steady hand was holding her heart in place.
Another voice echoed in her mind.
Of course. Being with him always made her feel safe.
She nodded gently, replying, “It’s an honor to be here, truly.”
Whether this was a job offer or something more personal, she’d thought it through, weighed her options, and mustered up her courage.
This time, she hoped she wouldn’t lose everything again.
The embrace didn’t last long.
A few minutes later, Dennis let go and headed back to work.
Camila watched his car pull away, her heart light and sweet, before turning and walking back inside the villa.
By then, Lillian had already finished her bath.
Camila had worried that after coming out, her little girl would immediately start asking for her dad. But, surprisingly, she didn’t.
Instead, Lillian was busy, rummaging around her room.
Curious, Camila asked, “Lillian, what are you looking for?”
“I’m hunting for treasure!” Lillian grinned at her mom. “Daddy said there’s a surprise hidden in the room! I’m trying to find it!”
