Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 607

Camila Davis didn’t answer right away. She just looked at Cynthia Lee, waiting for her to continue.

She didn’t know the full story about Dennis Williams, but she could guess enough. Besides, wasn’t this the whole reason she had come to the cocktail party anyway?

So she waited, her glass of chardonnay in hand.

Cynthia, taking Camila’s silence as encouragement, couldn’t help but flash a smug smile. “You know,” she began, swirling her own drink, “Dennis comes from one of the oldest, most prestigious families in Boston. He’s always been that golden boy—the guy every parent wishes their kid could be. Perfect grades, Ivy League, the works. He’s practically a Kennedy. Nobody our age comes close to his kind of success.”

She paused for effect, then added, “Sure, there are power players in the business world who might compete with him, but none of them have Dennis’s connections. Not just in business—he’s got friends in Congress, the Pentagon, even the White House. Most people would kill for that kind of influence.”

“In Boston, honestly? No one dares cross him. He’s the crown prince. Everyone praises him, and he has a spotless reputation.”

Cynthia glanced around, lowering her voice as if sharing a juicy piece of gossip. “This whole broken engagement thing? People heard about it, but no one really knows why he called it off. Everyone assumes there’s some big secret. And then—you show up…”

Camila blinked, her expression unreadable. After a beat, she shrugged lightly and asked, “Ms. Lee, are you suggesting I’m the skeleton in his closet?”

Cynthia’s gaze turned icy. She scoffed, “Aren’t you? He could have any woman he wants—trust me, every debutante in New England would die for a shot at him. Even European royals have tried to catch his eye. And out of all the eligible women, he doesn’t want any of them. But someone like you—divorced, with a kid? Imagine what people will say if he’s seen with you.”

Her tone dripped with contempt.

She pressed on, “Ms. Davis, you’re clearly aiming above your station. Have you ever considered what Dennis will have to deal with because of you? The whispers, the side-eyes at every charity gala or country club brunch? Before you, people would talk about Dennis and say nine wonderful things, maybe one word of envy. But now? Now they’ll say he’s involved with a divorcée, a single mom. That’s all anyone will remember.”
