"You..."
Cynthia Lee hadn’t expected it. After everything she’d said, Camila Davis was still rock-solid, completely unfazed.
Her plan had obviously failed. Even though Cynthia was fuming inside, her good upbringing kept her from making a scene in public.
She took a deep breath, composed herself, then shot Camila a frosty look. “You make this sound so simple. You really think you can just relax and let things work themselves out?”
“I’m just trying to give you some advice here,” she continued, her voice cold, “but the Collinses and the Williamses aren’t so easy to deal with. When they come for you, you’ll wish you’d listened.”
“Thanks for the warning,” Camila replied calmly.
Cynthia looked like she’d just swallowed a mouthful of spoiled milk, and stomped away, clearly annoyed.
Camila watched her go, her expression as cool as ever.
Not long after Cynthia left, Sarah Brown came back to Camila’s side, looking confused. “Camila, who was that? What did she want with you?”
Camila swirled her champagne and answered lightly, “That was Cynthia Lee, heiress of the Lee family.”
Sarah’s eyes went wide. “Wait, that Cynthia Lee? What was she doing? Was she giving you a hard time?”
Camila couldn’t help but laugh at Sarah’s worried tone. “Not really. She just came over to say her piece, but I guess I annoyed her enough that she stormed off.”
Sarah stared at her, unconvinced. “What’d you guys even talk about?”
Camila didn’t bother hiding anything, and briefly explained Cynthia’s real intentions.
Sarah’s brow furrowed. So that was it—Cynthia had come over, acting all high and mighty, just to put Camila down and make her back off.
Sarah huffed, “Don’t fall for it. She’s just pissed that Mr. Williams picked you, so she’s acting like you’re not good enough. But that’s total crap—Camila, you’re amazing!”
“She might be some fancy heiress, but it’s not like she’s paying her own way through med school! Strip away her last name and she’s nobody. You’re at the research institute. You’ve got a real future ahead—she couldn’t even shine your shoes!”
Sarah’s pep talk was a little over the top, but it was sweet.
Camila grinned. “Don’t worry. I didn’t let her get to me. That’s why she left so pissed.”
Sarah let out a relieved sigh. “Good. I was worried she’d get under your skin.”
Meanwhile, Cynthia Lee returned to her table, still looking furious.
She refused to believe Dennis Williams would ever fall for someone with Camila’s baggage.
She’d tried everything to keep tabs on Dennis’s life in New York, and all her sources said he’d been spending a lot of time with Camila. After he broke off the engagement, it all clicked into place. But she was sure they weren’t actually together—Dennis was just being kind.
Still, Cynthia couldn’t help but feel threatened by Camila, even though she used to think she was no competition. Dennis was in Boston, Camila was in New York—their paths barely crossed. Out of sight, out of mind.
Until tonight, when Camila walked through the door.
The moment Cynthia saw her, she wanted to put Camila in her place.
But Camila turned out to be much harder to shake than expected...
Cynthia kept telling herself Dennis could never fall for a divorced woman. He was so proud, so untouchable. Women had been chasing him since they were kids—he wouldn’t settle for anything less than perfect.
But after her run-in with Camila, Cynthia wasn’t so sure anymore.
Was Camila here in Boston because Dennis wanted her here?
Could they actually be together already...?
