Camila Davis couldn’t help but laugh when she heard Sarah’s words. “Aren’t you getting a little ahead of yourself? We’ve only been seeing each other for a few days.”
Sarah Brown just shrugged, grinning. “So what? If you meet the right person, people get hitched in Vegas all the time.”
Camila shook her head, still smiling. “Don’t be ridiculous. After one failed marriage, I’m not about to rush into another. Especially not with someone like Dennis—he’s a really great guy, so I have to be careful.”
She took a sip of her coffee. “We’re just getting started. We need time to figure things out, see if we really fit. If it works out, I’ll know.”
Sarah nodded, understanding. “Yeah, that makes sense. After falling flat on your face once, anyone would be more careful. I get it. I’ll keep my wild ideas to myself next time.”
She hesitated, then her eyes lit up. “Anyway, wasn’t it awesome what the Allen family pulled off this time? That whole country club crowd—after what Mr. Williams did, they must finally realize how much you mean to him.”
Camila chuckled. “It’s not that simple. There are always people who just can’t let things go. And let’s not forget—I’ve been divorced. Even if I don’t care, even if Dennis doesn’t care, that’s the first thing they’ll use to attack me. You saw it at the gala last night, right? Those trust-fund babies and old-money families—most of them think they’re better than anyone who’s been through a divorce.”
She made a face. “Plus, there are plenty of women after Dennis. I’m sure they’ll keep trying every trick in the book.”
Sarah snorted. “Like that Cynthia Lee, for instance?”
Mentioning the name seemed to remind her of something. “Oh! I was chatting with Larry Adams and Aurora last night over a couple of beers, and we talked about the whole Cynthia thing. I told them how she pulled you aside to talk, and we started thinking… something about it felt off.”
Camila’s brows furrowed. “Go on.”
Sarah nodded, lowering her voice. “You know, that whole thing with Jonathan Allen coming over to chat you up? I don’t think it was random. Someone probably set it up.”
Camila had thought about that, too. “I mean, I was minding my own business in the corner—why would a guy like Jonathan, who only ever hangs out with the party crowd, suddenly come my way? Especially right after Cynthia had just left? It’s a bit too coincidental.”
