Larry Adams still looked worried. “You know, family ties can be weird. Sometimes, blood just doesn’t make sense, and all the work you put in can fall apart because of it.”
Dennis Williams scoffed, “That so-called blood? It’s barely there anymore. And honestly, family bonds like that? They’re not strong enough to hold Lillian back.
She might be young, but she knows her own mind.
Honestly, she’s got more in common with Camila than with that guy.”
Larry frowned, not quite following. “What do you mean?”
Dennis explained, “When Lillian forgot about Smith, it was self-hypnosis. She wanted to forget him. Even if she remembers one day, she’s not going to let him back in. Lillian’s my daughter. That guy lost his shot at being her dad the first time he put his precious firstborn before her.”
Dennis wasn’t just speaking as a psychologist—he genuinely believed in Lillian. She wasn’t some clueless kid. She saw through Jordan Smith and made her own choice, wiping both him and the whole Smith clan from her life.
Or maybe, Dennis figured, Lillian hadn’t really forgotten—she just decided not to acknowledge them anymore.
Larry finally relaxed a bit. “You’re right, Dennis. Love answers to love. And you’ve always cared for that kid just as much—hell, more—than Smith ever did. Smith’s just her biological dad, nothing more. He never did a damn thing for her, never once acted like a real father.”
Larry paused, then added, “I’m not worried about Lillian. But I am worried that Jordan Smith won’t give up. What if he shows up in Maplewood, trying to make trouble?”
Everyone in town knew Dennis and Camila were the golden couple. If Smith came stirring things up, plenty of people would love the drama. And all those high-society girls still hoping Dennis would come running back—well, they’d just fan the flames.
Dennis just shrugged. “Let him come. He can see for himself how happy Camila and I are. Maybe then he’ll realize what a fool he was for letting her go. And come on, do you really think I’d lose to a guy like that?”
Larry didn’t even have to think. “Not a chance.”
