Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 647

Camila Davis heard the footsteps behind her and turned instinctively, only to meet Dennis Williams’ gaze—he was wearing that half-smile of his, the one that always made her a little nervous.

She hadn’t expected him to show up like this, and it startled her. She quickly mumbled into her phone, “Yeah, sounds good. I’ll let you handle it from here, I’ve got a thing, gotta run.” She hung up and slipped her phone away, then looked at Dennis.

“When did you get here?” she asked, trying to sound casual, but really hoping he hadn’t overheard her conversation with her old professor.

Dennis raised an eyebrow, his tone playful. “So, you’ve got a thing for guys who are six-foot-three and ripped? That’s what I’m hearing?”

Camila’s cheeks flushed. She hadn’t realized he’d caught that part. She rushed to explain, “No! That’s not—I mean, it’s not what you think.”

He nodded, still looking at her with that maddeningly patient expression. “Then what is it?”

Camila sighed, feeling a little helpless. “That was just my old professor calling about work starting tomorrow. I’m worried about Lillian, so I asked him if he could recommend a couple of bodyguards. You know, just to keep an eye on things while I’m away at the research center.”

She left out the real reason—no point dragging him into her worries.

Dennis’s eyes softened, but there was a hint of something else—was it possessiveness? “And you didn’t think to ask me? My guys are just as good as anything Dr. Morris could arrange.”

Camila almost laughed at the competitive edge in his voice. She shook her head. “I just didn’t want to bother you with something so small. You’ve got enough on your plate.”

He shook his head. “Camila, nothing about you or Lillian is small to me. Besides, I’ve already had people keeping an eye out since what happened with Cynthia Lee. So you really don’t have to worry. Just focus on your work.”

She blinked, surprised, realizing he’d thought ahead even more than she had.

For a moment, Camila hesitated. Did that mean he’d also seen the news online? After a pause, she decided to just ask. “Did you… see that news earlier this week?”

Dennis, for his part, had cleared his schedule for them in those first two weeks, but as Camila got busier, he dove back into his own mountain of work.

Especially with The Collins Group. Ever since Dennis took over, the company had started to see real results—profits were up, and his supporters wanted him to take full charge. But there were plenty of people still loyal to his stepmother, stirring up trouble at every opportunity.

The place was a minefield, with power plays and backstabbing becoming almost routine. Dennis, though, didn’t hesitate. He cleaned house, cut out the dead weight, and kept moving forward, even if it meant working late into the night.

Suddenly, the high society crowd in Cabinda, who used to see Mr. Williams maybe once a year, were running into him at every other business dinner or charity gala. Sometimes, if you were lucky, you’d spot him twice in the same week.

But the biggest surprise? No one ever saw Camila at his side—not since that one night at the gala. People had started gossiping, wondering about the state of their relationship. Some were hoping to get close to Dennis themselves, convinced he deserved someone “better,” while others—well, they were just waiting for a gap they could slip through.

But Dennis seemed unbothered, and Camila, absorbed in her work and her daughter, never gave them a second thought. For now, that was enough.
