Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 649

Of course, Sarah Brown knew exactly what Aurora Robinson was getting at.

She thought it over, and realized that no matter how hard Cynthia Lee tried, her endgame was always the same.

She wanted to get her engagement to Dennis Williams back.

“Now that she’s got no shot with Dennis himself, her only angle left must be through the Williams family elders, right?”

The more Sarah considered it, the less hope she saw there.

After all, marriage should be Dennis Williams’ own decision.

Even if the Williams elders wanted to play matchmaker, as long as Dennis refused, there was nothing they could do.

And as for Cynthia trying to get to Camila Davis… well, good luck with that.

“I honestly think she’s just wasting her time. Camila’s so busy these days, even her own friends barely see her. And if she does have free time, she’s probably with Dennis, enjoying their own little world. Who has time for Cynthia?”

But Aurora shook her head. “Don’t underestimate her sucking up to Mr. Williams Senior. Remember, he was the one who set up Dennis and Cynthia’s engagement in the first place. He always wanted her as his granddaughter-in-law. Dennis going against his wishes already upset him. And that whole scene at the charity gala a while back? That just made Mr. Williams Senior even angrier.

So now, the more sweet and well-behaved Cynthia acts, the guiltier he feels. That just makes him more likely to oppose Dennis and Camila being together! Things seem calm now, but that’s only because Dennis and his grandfather haven’t had a real falling out yet. If this drags on, do you really think the old man’s going to stay so friendly?”

She paused, then asked, “Do you know much about Dennis’ family background?”

Sarah nodded. “A little, yeah,” and gave a quick summary of what she’d heard.

But Aurora sighed. “You don’t know the half of it. After Dennis’ mom passed away, he had a rough time with the Collins family—lots of strict rules, plenty of cold shoulders. When Mr. Williams Senior finally brought Dennis back, the whole Williams clan treated him like a real son. That’s a kind of warmth only true family can give.

So Dennis doesn’t care much for the Collins family, but he’s super attached to the Williamses—especially his grandfather.

And lately, Mr. Williams Senior’s health has been getting worse. He was just in the hospital a few months ago. He can’t handle much stress or drama. If things really hit the fan, Dennis might have to choose. If you were in his shoes—what would you do?”

“Wow…” Sarah frowned, imagining herself in that situation. It was a tough choice.

On one side, a grandfather you respect; on the other, the person you love.

Being caught in the middle like that is every couple’s nightmare.

And if Mr. Williams Senior ever tried to use his health as leverage… what would Camila do then?

Sarah started to worry.

“I wish it were true. But as far as I know, they’re still together. Camila’s just been off the radar lately because she got into the National Research Institute.”

Cynthia always kept close tabs on Camila Davis. Even though her last attempt to have her followed fell through, she still had plenty of connections in the city and could get updates when she wanted.

Everyone was saying Dennis hadn’t brought Camila to any public events lately because she was too busy to tag along.

Nicholas hadn’t known until Cynthia mentioned it, but Camila being invited to a national-level research institute was no small thing.

He saw things differently than Cynthia did. Forget about divorce or being dumped—the real issue was that Camila now moved in the same high-level circles as Dennis.

The institute was packed with top-tier talent, and that kind of access was way beyond what the Lee family could reach right now—even the pharmaceutical contracts were military.

No wonder Dennis Williams chose her, Nicholas realized, a thoughtful look crossing his face.

Cynthia saw her father’s expression darken and was about to say something when he turned serious.

“Nancy, you need to be proactive. Go visit Mr. Williams Senior more often. Bring him some nice gourmet baskets, check on his health. Build that relationship.

And by the way—Audrey Williams is coming back soon, isn’t she?”
