Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 660

Late again, working overtime in the lab.

Even iron men have their limits, Dennis thought. If she keeps this up, she’ll get sick—and who’ll be the one worried sick about her? Him, of course.

But he never expected what she was really working so hard for.

“You… Camila, all this—was it for my grandpa?”

Camila Davis nodded, her smile shy but determined. “Yeah. I know dating me probably ruffled some feathers with your family. There’s always gossip, and you’d probably take the heat for me, shield me from all that drama. But since we’re together, I can’t just let you handle everything alone.”

She paused, searching his face. “I don’t know if it’ll change how your grandpa sees me, but I do know you care about him—a lot. After he got sick, you never talked about it, but I could tell you were worried. And, well, I went to med school, and I know a thing or two about making supplements and health food. He’s your family, so of course I want to help.”

She hesitated, then added with a nervous laugh, “Store-bought vitamins are fine, but they’re not tailored for him. I used some old recipes from my medical textbooks to make these protein shakes and health bars, with just the right mix. They’re gentle, nourishing, and I made sure everything was just right. I just want him to feel better.”

When Sarah had gossiped about the Williamses, Camila’s first thought wasn’t fear of being torn apart by Dennis’s family. It was worry for Dennis himself—caught between her and the people he loved.

As his girlfriend, she wanted to do her part to bridge the gap—anything to make his life a little easier.

Dennis just stared at her, silent. His gaze was intense, unreadable.

Camila fidgeted, voice small: “What’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?”

He still didn’t answer. Inside, Dennis felt a storm of emotion—like a tidal wave crashing through his carefully-built defenses. He’d always prided himself on being calm, rational, unshakable—except when it came to memories of his late mother.

But now, this woman, with her small, thoughtful acts, was melting all that ice.

He hated seeing her push herself so hard—but everything she did, she did for him.

Without warning, Dennis grabbed her by the waist and lifted her onto the table. One hand tilted her chin up, and suddenly his lips were on hers—urgent, hungry, almost desperate.

Camila wrinkled her nose. “That’s exactly why I want to do something. Because I know you’re good to me, and I don’t want it to be all one-sided.”

She pressed her face to his chest, listening to his heartbeat. “Dennis, love is a two-way street. I can’t just take, and not give back. That’s not fair, even to the person closest to you.”

She looked up into his eyes. “You give me so much love, so much security, sometimes it feels unreal. And honestly, it scares me a little—what if something happens, and it all falls apart? I don’t want us to ever get to that point.”

She smiled softly. “You want to take care of me. But I want to take care of you, too. Haven’t you ever thought, when you worry about me, that I worry about you just as much?”

After that talk with Sarah, she’d thought about it a lot. Dennis always looked to the future—she couldn’t just live in the moment. She had to be brave enough to think about what came next.

If they lasted, it would be about two families coming together. From now on, she’d have to stand by him—guard what they had, together.

Wasn’t that what love was all about?
