Camila Davis didn’t know much about the restaurant scene in Cabinda. In fact, she barely knew anything at all—especially about a place as exclusive as The Gilded Fork.
When Dennis Williams had offered to make the arrangements, she’d handed the responsibility over without a second thought. She never imagined he’d pull off something this impressive.
The reactions from her colleagues as they took in the setting were plain as day.
Camila pressed her lips together, feeling a wave of warmth and sweetness rush through her chest.
This was just so Dennis. He always made sure everything was perfect for her, no matter what.
She smiled warmly at everyone and said, “Really, it’s no trouble at all. You all came such a long way to work here—this is the least I could do. Tonight, just relax and enjoy yourselves. Don’t stand on ceremony; eat, drink, and have fun. Come on, let’s go in.”
With that, Camila led the way, ushering everyone through the entrance.
Walter Wilson followed behind, lips drawn into a thin, unsmiling line. His expression was all cool edges and shadows, his eyes dark and unreadable.
Once inside, the group rode the elevator straight up to the restaurant’s main floor.
After Camila confirmed their reservation, a server escorted them to the best private dining room in the place.
The meal began with laughter and easy conversation. The atmosphere was lively, and her colleagues showed genuine interest in her work at the research institute.
Camila answered their questions selectively, careful not to reveal anything confidential. After all, there were things about the institute she simply couldn’t share.
Still, it was obvious everyone admired her position.
“Only someone as brilliant and capable as Ms. Davis could land a spot at the institute,” one colleague remarked, clearly impressed.
“Exactly! And passing the assessment right away, then becoming a team leader—that just proves she’s in a league of her own,” another added.
Just like that, the tension between them melted away.
Dinner stretched on for nearly two hours, everyone eating and drinking their fill. When it was over, Walter stepped out to take a call from a client.
Camila, thinking the night was winding down, started to gather her things to head home for some much-needed rest.
But then, not long after Walter left the room, her phone rang. She rolled her eyes—he was just outside, and now he was calling her?
Still, she answered.
Walter’s voice was tight and urgent on the other end. “Camila, get up to VIP Room One, now. Bring your medical kit!”
Startled by the seriousness in his tone—something she’d rarely heard—Camila’s heart skipped a beat. Instantly, she knew something must have happened.
