Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 69

Daniel had no objections at all. “Don’t worry, Mom—I’m a total pro at this!”

“Excellent!” Sandra Taylor beamed, ruffling his hair. “As long as we keep this up, he’ll come back to us eventually.”

Daniel nodded, then looked up seriously. “Mom, am I really Dad Jordan’s son?”

Sandra’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Of course you are! Back in the day, I had to leave your Dad Jordan for certain reasons. That’s when Camila Davis swooped in and stole him away while I was gone.”

Daniel’s face twisted with an anger that seemed too harsh for his age. “That woman’s terrible. I’ll make sure she pays for it! And her daughter isn’t any better—she’s just a clueless brat. Dad Jordan doesn’t even like her…”

He puffed up with a little smugness. “Mom, I’m gonna prove I’m the smartest and the best, so Dad Jordan will like me so much more! When the time comes, we’ll kick that woman and her idiot daughter out of the Smiths’ house!”

“Absolutely,” Sandra replied, her smile widening, her eyes glinting with unmasked greed.

She didn’t just want Jordan Smith back. She wanted to be Mrs. Smith, too.

Back then, she’d thought another man could offer her more. But after making the wrong choice, she’d regretted it deeply. After the divorce, she’d made up some excuse to trick Jordan Smith, and he’d believed her without question.

She wouldn’t let this opportunity slip by again.

That evening, once again and unsurprisingly, Jordan Smith didn’t come home.

Camila Davis was used to it by now—she didn’t even bat an eye.

The next morning, just as she was finishing her toast and coffee, her phone buzzed. It was Walter Wilson.

“Hey, Camila—Mr. Harris wants to see you. Could you come by the hospital today?”

Camila figured something must be up with his treatment, so she didn’t waste any time and hurried over.

When she got to the hospital room, she found Mr. Harris sitting up in bed, looking bright-eyed and energetic.

Camila stared at him, dumbfounded.

She’d never imagined that Mr. Harris would create an opportunity like this for her. These were national heroes, folks who did secret missions for the country—people regular civilians never got to meet.

And now, she was being invited to help them, with the added bonus of possibly meeting the psychologist she’d been searching for. Not to mention, she’d get paid for it.

She looked at Mr. Harris, overwhelmed with gratitude. “Mr. Harris, thank you. Honestly, I don’t need to be paid for helping them. It’s my honor.”

He waved his hand. “You earned it—medicine is your profession, and you deserve to get paid. But—” he paused, “keep in mind, you might not meet that psychologist right away. Just treat this like any other job, okay? Don’t get your hopes up too much.”

He didn’t want her to be disappointed if things didn’t work out.

Camila nodded in understanding. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep my expectations low. Even if I don’t see them this time, I’ll keep coming back to help. Sooner or later, I’ll get my chance.”

Mr. Harris smiled. “That’s the spirit.”
