After chatting with Mr. Harris for a while, Camila Davis scheduled an appointment with him.
He promised to send a car to pick her up when the time came.
Once everything was settled, Camila didn’t want to disturb Mr. Harris any further, so she excused herself and slipped out of the room.
Outside in the hallway, she could barely hide her excitement and anticipation.
She was finally going to meet that mysterious psychologist!
If she could convince him to help, maybe—just maybe—Lillian would finally get better.
Lost in her happy thoughts, Camila glanced up and spotted Walter Wilson leaning casually against the corridor wall. He had one ankle crossed over the other and his hands stuffed in his pockets, looking completely at ease. Honestly, with his tousled hair, tall frame, and the kind of good looks that seemed almost unfair, he pulled off the whole “charming rebel” vibe without even trying.
It was obvious he’d been waiting for her.
Camila didn’t hesitate. She strode right up to him, looking him straight in the eye.
Walter arched a brow and smirked. “I know I’m a sight for sore eyes, but you don’t have to stare that hard.”
She ignored the cocky remark and grinned, “Thanks, Walter.”
He played dumb, feigning surprise. “Thanks? For what?”
Camila rolled her eyes at his terrible acting. “You set this up, didn’t you? You knew I was looking for that psychologist for Mr. Harris’ treatment.”
His eyebrows shot up even higher, and he didn’t answer—which pretty much said it all.
The realization made her heart warm—and a bit sad. Her friend was willing to go to such lengths for Lillian, while Lillian’s own father, Jordan Smith, couldn’t even be bothered. Jordan had always brushed off Nora Lewis’ incompetence, blaming Camila for “making a fuss.” The contrast stung.
Camila pushed those thoughts aside and gave Walter a sincere look. “Seriously. Thank you.”
Walter made a face, like the gratitude embarrassed him. He straightened up, changing the subject. “I overheard what Mr. Harris said. You know, the soldiers you’re going to treat—they’re not your average Joes. You’ll need to be extra careful this time. No slip-ups.”
He trusted her skills, but even the best could have an off day.
Camila nodded, determined. “Don’t worry. I’ll be ready for anything.”
A few more words passed between them before Walter had to leave for work. Camila headed home, too.
As soon as she got in, she fired up her laptop and dove into research about the kinds of injuries soldiers might face. She was taking this case more seriously than anything before, reading and taking notes for hours. By late afternoon, she’d already filled several pages with possible scenarios and treatment plans, determined not to leave anything to chance.
