Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 728

“If you had a shred of decency left, you wouldn’t come here and bother us!”

“Your presence only disgusts us, makes us hate you even more, and makes us wish you’d left the Smith family a long time ago!”

Throwing those harsh words over her shoulder, Camila Davis didn’t spare a single glance back. She marched off briskly, leaving him behind.

Jordan Smith gripped the arms of his wheelchair so tightly his knuckles went white, his eyes dark and stormy, roiling with emotions he couldn’t name.

From the shadows, Nathan Gates stepped out just in time to catch that look on his boss’s face—and it sent an uneasy chill down his spine.

Honestly, Nathan wasn’t the least bit surprised things had ended this way between them. After all, Jordan was the one in the wrong. He’d let her down, and it was only natural for Camila to cut him off like that.

But these were thoughts Nathan wouldn’t dare voice out loud.

After Camila left, Jordan sat in silence for a long while, his expression unreadable.

When Nathan finally glanced at him again, he saw something bleak and lost in his boss’s eyes. “She used to care about me more than anything,” Jordan said, voice hoarse. “Now she says she can’t stand the sight of me. We’ve been divorced less than a year, and she’s already moved on.”

Nathan said nothing.

Part of him wanted to remind his boss that Camila had spent more than four years trying to win over a heart that never warmed to her. As the old saying goes, a glacier doesn’t form overnight. Disappointment, too, is a slow accumulation.

But Nathan kept his thoughts to himself. He knew that once Jordan Smith had set his mind on coming to Cabinda, there was no changing it.

Still, as an assistant, he felt obligated to offer some advice. “Ms. Davis and Lillian are doing really well now. Maybe it’s time to let them go? You’ve seen for yourself how happy they are together. If you let go now, at least you’ll still have a relationship with your daughter in the future.”

But Jordan only shook his head, an odd flicker of confidence lighting his features. “She and Dennis Williams? That’ll never last.”

Nathan frowned. “Why not?”

Jordan’s answer was cold, almost cryptic. “You’ll see soon enough.”

Nathan could only sigh inwardly. Whatever. His boss’s decisions were his own, and it wasn’t his place to interfere.

After leaving the restroom, Camila Davis forced herself to shake off those unpleasant memories. She refused to let Jordan ruin her mood—especially not in front of Dennis Williams. The last thing she wanted was for someone so unimportant to sour his day.

She tried to explain, but Dennis cut her off with another kiss, this one firmer. His voice was low, serious. “Why waste your emotions on someone who means nothing? I’m right here, Camila. All you need to do is look at me, stay focused on me, understand? As for what he wants, or what he’s trying to do—it’s nothing but the desperate flailing of a man who’s lost everything.”

“In my eyes, the moment he let you go, he’d already lost. Now, I’m the one holding the real treasure. If I let him take you away, then I’d be the real fool.”

Camila couldn’t help but laugh, her earlier frustration melting away. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him back. “You’re not a fool, and you never will be.”

With Dennis Williams by her side, she was determined to help him win—every time.

Satisfied by her response, Dennis hugged her close, gently pinched her earlobe, and murmured, “Good girl…”

Then he leaned in, capturing her lips in a slow, lingering kiss. It was tender, full of affection, and neither of them wanted it to end.

By the time the car pulled up to the restaurant, they finally broke apart.

As they stepped out, Jarvis Peters emerged from the car behind them. He glanced at Camila and blurted out in surprise, “Camila, what happened to your mouth? It looks kind of swollen—are you having an allergic reaction or something?”

It was clear things had been perfectly fine just moments ago.
