Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 762

But… their daughter was grown now.

Her life—how she chose to live it—was no longer something they could control.

Besides, this wasn’t just a passing matter; it was something that would shape the rest of her life.

As parents, how could they possibly be persuaded to let go with just a few words?

Still, they had to face the truth.

The Camila Davis standing before them now was no longer the same girl from a few years back.

She’d matured. Even if she ended up with the wrong person again, she probably wouldn’t be shattered the way she had been before.

Neither Jerry nor Melissa wanted to accept this, but all they could do was slowly come to terms with it.

After a long, heavy silence, Jerry Davis finally let out a sigh and said, “Alright, we’ll talk about this again later.

You and Dennis haven’t been together that long yet—there’s still plenty of time.

But there’s one thing I want you to promise us.”

Camila nodded without hesitation. “Anything. Just tell me.”

Jerry’s expression turned unusually serious. “If you ever start thinking about marriage again, your mother and I want you to listen to us about it.

If we don’t give our blessing, we want you to promise you won’t go through with it. Can you do that?”

This, they thought, was the only protection they could still offer their daughter.

Melissa gave Camila a long, earnest look, making it clear she felt the same way as her husband.

They couldn’t stop her from dating, but when it came to marriage, they insisted on having the final say.

If Dennis Williams’s family refused to accept her, or treated Lillian poorly, then even if it cost them everything, they’d fight to keep her from marrying him.

Camila understood exactly what her parents were thinking.

She agreed almost instantly. “Alright. I’ll do as you say.”

What came next, no one could predict.

But, for now, the fact that Camila was still willing to listen brought Melissa genuine comfort.

She squeezed Camila’s hand. “No going back on your word.”

Camila met her mother’s gaze, nodding solemnly. “Never.”

Only then did her parents manage to put their worries aside, if only a little.

Even though the conversation was out in the open now, it would take time for any of them to truly move on.

Camila knew that bringing up Dennis any further would only upset her parents again, so she decided to steer the topic elsewhere.

Melissa seemed to have the same idea, asking about her work at the institute. “How’s your job going? What did the research center say to you?”

Jerry looked at her with concern as well. “Before we came, your supervisor mentioned something, but not in detail. When will you be able to return to work?”

Compared to the subject of Dennis, this was a much lighter topic.

Camila just answered honestly, sharing what Dennis had told her as well.

But after hearing her explanation, her parents couldn’t help but frown, worry still written all over their faces.

“Oh really? You’re so talented, Lillian!”

“Of course we want to see it! We’re dying to know what your studio looks like now.”

Just like that, the little one had them both smiling again, their worries about Camila and Dennis momentarily forgotten.

Later in the evening, the child began yawning, unable to stay awake any longer.

Melissa took her granddaughter back to their room, tucking her in the way she always had.

Finally, Camila was able to return to her own room and get ready for bed.

No sooner had she lain down than her phone buzzed with a new message.

She glanced at the screen—it was Dennis Williams.

“Are Mr. and Mrs. Davis asleep now?”

Camila frowned, puzzled. “How did you know?”

Dennis replied almost immediately. “I’m outside.”

Surprised, Camila jumped up and hurried to the window.

Sure enough, Dennis’s car was parked just down the street from the house.

So… he’d left and come back?

Or had he never left at all?
