Camila barely thought twice before hurrying down the stairs and rushing out to the car.
Dennis was just opening the driver’s side door as she arrived.
Sliding into the passenger seat, Camila blurted out, “Why are you still here? Did you finish your work and come back?”
Dennis shook his head. “I never left.”
She stared at him, surprised. “Why not?”
He looked over at her. “I was worried. Tonight, I noticed something off about your parents. Figured they wanted to talk to you about us. It’s pretty clear they’re not convinced.”
Camila was at a loss for words. How could he tell?
But then again, Dennis’s job pretty much required him to be an expert at reading people.
She hesitated, unsure how to explain.
So Dennis asked directly, “What did your parents say to you?”
Camila went quiet for a moment before answering. “They were shocked about our relationship, but it’s not that they disapprove of you. If anything, they think you’re almost too perfect—it feels unreal to them.”
Dennis smirked, reaching over to brush her cheek gently. His voice softened. “And what about you? What did you tell them?”
“I told them how I feel,” Camila replied. “They’re worried, but I made it clear I know what I want. They respect that, but… they had one condition.”
“Oh? What is it?” Dennis watched her, curious.
She answered honestly, “They said when it comes to my marriage, they want the final say. And… I agreed.”
Dennis just raised an eyebrow. “So, if I want to marry you, I have to get their blessing first?”
Camila nodded, looking apologetic. “Sorry, I just… I can’t say no to them. They’re only doing it because they care about me.”
He gave an exasperated little laugh. “Why apologize? I’m not upset with you. I understand where they’re coming from. They’re worried you’ll repeat past mistakes. Honestly, I get it—they’re also concerned my family might not accept you, and that being with me could mean trouble for you.”
He’d hit the nail on the head.
“Okay!”
After talking with him, Camila felt lighter. She got out of the car and leaned in through the open window. “Drive safe, okay? Text me when you get in.”
Dennis nodded. “I will.”
He watched her head back inside before driving away.
But that very night, rumors about Camila started spreading like wildfire around the institute. The gossip was everywhere: Mr. Williams’s new girlfriend was all looks and no substance. They said she’d only gotten her spot at the institute thanks to Dennis’s connections, and that she’d made mistakes at work but refused to take responsibility—she was even trying to blame her colleagues for her suspension.
In social circles, a handful of society girls started speaking up, claiming Dennis could do so much better. What did he see in someone like her? She was a disgrace—totally unworthy of Mr. Williams.
Cynthia Lee, who’d been searching for a way to take Camila down, was practically giddy when she heard what people were saying. She immediately texted Natalie Morris: “Where did you hear all this about Camila?”
Normally, the institute’s business was kept tightly under wraps—outsiders never got this kind of information.
But Natalie, who had always looked down on Camila, had already done her homework. She replied quickly: “It’s from Ms. Roberts’s side. The Roberts family has a relative at the institute. The info is absolutely legit.”
