“Sarah and Walter are here?”
Melissa George spotted them and quickly waved them over. “Come on in, everything’s already ordered.”
“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Davis! When did you get here? You should have told me in advance—I’d have come by to welcome you and shown you around Cabinda myself.”
Sarah Brown regained her composure and chatted easily with the older couple, slipping effortlessly into small talk.
Melissa beamed at Sarah, took her hand, and guided her to the seat beside her. “No need to be so formal. We only flew in last night, honestly.
And really, thank you for looking after Camila and the others here in Cabinda.”
She didn’t forget Walter, either, turning gratefully to him. “Walter, you’ve been working so hard with The Smith Group. Most of the heavy lifting falls on you. If it weren’t for your efforts, Camila wouldn’t enjoy being so hands-off with the company.”
Walter shook his head. “It’s nothing, really. I’m a partner, after all. And Camila’s work in research isn’t any easier than my end. You don’t have to thank me.”
With the older generation present, the group let certain topics drop for the time being.
Dinner was lively and pleasant.
After the meal, Lillian wanted to go outside to see the koi fish, so Melissa and Jerry Davis, ever indulgent, took her out for a stroll.
Seizing the opportunity, Sarah pulled Camila aside to ask about the rumors they’d heard.
Camila’s face registered surprise. “How did you find out?”
She sighed, confiding in her friend, “The situation at the institute isn’t resolved yet, so I didn’t want to worry you all.”
“You might want to keep it quiet, but some people just won’t let it go.”
Sarah’s expression darkened as she said, “I don’t know who started it, but now everyone in the upper circles is talking about your suspension from the institute. They’re saying you embarrassed Mr. Williams and all sorts of other nonsense.”
Walter chimed in, “It was Ms. Roberts who spread the news. I’ve checked.”
Camila immediately understood. “So, my suspicions were right. This really does have everything to do with her.”
“How so?” Walter looked at her, puzzled.
Sarah was confused too, so Camila briefly explained.
Hearing that someone at the institute might have set Camila up, Sarah was appalled. “Is Harper Thompson out of her mind? Doesn’t she realize she could destroy her own career if the truth comes out? And as for Lavinia Roberts—she’s always been insufferable, got what she deserved before, and still hasn’t learned her lesson.”
His calm, deep voice came through the line. “I didn’t want you to hear about this, but I guess it was inevitable.”
Camila frowned. “This must be exactly what Lavinia Roberts wanted. She’s not just slandering me—she wants to ruin my whole reputation in the medical field.”
Dennis’s voice was reassuring. “Don’t worry. I’m already handling it. Who ends up ruined remains to be seen.”
The Roberts family had no shortage of skeletons in their closet. They’d brought this on themselves—no one could save them now.
Hearing his confidence, Camila immediately felt at ease. “Then I’ll leave it to you. With you here, I know everything will be fine.”
There was absolute trust in her words. She knew Dennis would never let her be bullied.
His tone softened, warm and full of affection. “Of course. As long as I’m here, no one will hurt you.”
With the matter settled, they chatted for a while longer before saying goodnight.
Dennis was still at the office, busy at The Smith Group, when Audrey Williams suddenly burst through the door.
Naturally, she was there for Camila’s sake. As soon as she entered, she stormed at Dennis, “That Lavinia Roberts is completely out of control. Camila is being treated like this—what are you planning to do about it?”
