And now, when she woke up sore and couldn’t help but complain, he accepted it all, pampering her without reservation and catering to her every whim. Camila felt, for the first time, what it was like to be truly cherished.
After dinner, she finally felt comfortable and content. A pleasant lethargy settled over her, making her reluctant to move, so she curled up on the sofa with a laptop to handle some work. Dennis came over and settled beside her, pulling her into his arms. He wasn’t idle either; there were many decisions to be made for the Smith Group, so he read through documents while holding her. They were as natural and affectionate as a pair of newlywed sweethearts.
Camila’s phone was still buzzing with unread messages, including an apology from Benjamin Torres.
*I never imagined Lavinia Roberts and Harper Thompson would stoop so low as to frame you like that. This is all my fault. I’m so sorry. Harper was officially fired from the institute today. She was looking to cause more trouble, but you weren’t here, so you dodged a bullet. As for the Roberts family, I’m sorry about that too. I had no idea Lavinia was so vindictive and ruthless.*
Camila read the message and simply replied: *It’s in the past.*
She didn’t say she forgave him, nor did she mention Harper or Lavinia again. In principle, Benjamin wasn’t to blame; he hadn’t participated in the scheme. But on the other hand, Harper had acted out of her feelings for him. So, he wasn’t entirely innocent, either. He was a key figure in the whole affair. Camila couldn’t bring herself to say, “It has nothing to do with you.”
Reading about Lavinia’s fate, Camila felt no sympathy, only a sense that she had gotten what she deserved. When you spread malice, it eventually comes back to you. She hoped Lavinia had learned her lesson.
But she knew the Roberts family’s swift downfall was largely due to the man beside her. He had been instrumental. None of it was his business, but he had intervened to protect her from being wronged. It was because he was so good to her that she had so willingly fallen for him.
