Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 840

Audrey looked hesitant and confused, unable to make up her mind. She stammered for a moment, wanting to say something but afraid of hurting her brother’s pride.

Seeing her turmoil, Dennis patted her head. “Alright, stop thinking about it. The medical records are real. I was seriously injured on a mission a while back. I almost died several times. And it’s true that I need time to recover. But… I may have altered the interpretation slightly. The doctor’s exact words were that I need a few years to recover and that I should avoid having children during that time.”

Audrey’s jaw dropped. She replayed his words in her mind, and her eyes widened in disbelief. “So… some of those medical records were fake?”

“As I said,” Dennis replied calmly, “the records are real. How one chooses to interpret them is a different matter.”

Audrey didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “But that’s a huge difference in interpretation! Temporarily unable to have children is not the same as being permanently infertile! You scared me to death!”

“My grandfather needed a dose of strong medicine,” Dennis said coolly. “He needed to understand just how important Camila is to me.” It wasn’t just about scaring the old man. His grandfather had threatened him first. This was simply his final, decisive countermove.

Audrey gave him a thumbs-up. “I’m seriously impressed.” She couldn’t believe the shock she had felt when she first saw the report. Now, she was moved. Her brother was willing to do anything to be with Camila, even tarnish his own reputation. A man of his status, his pride, going to such lengths for the woman he loved… it was unbelievable.

“You really do love her, don't you?” she said, a sense of awe in her voice.

Dennis’s gaze softened. He didn’t deny it. “So, remember to keep this a secret for me.”

Audrey nodded obediently, a determined fire in her eyes. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you. By the way, about those photos…” Her expression turned serious. “Grandpa didn’t have someone investigate. They were sent to the house anonymously this morning. I asked the butler, but he doesn’t know who sent them.”

Her voice was tight with anger, but she managed to explain. “It’s not me. It’s my mom. She’s been hurt. I just got to the hospital to see her.”

“Which hospital?” he asked without hesitation. “I’m on my way.”

She gave him the address and hung up. She had received the news just a short while ago and had been a nervous wreck the entire drive over. This afternoon, when her parents went to pick up Lillian from school, they had seen the Smith family waiting outside. Now that their daughter was free from that family and had started a new life in Cabinda, Melissa and her husband were determined not to let them interfere. The Smiths were demanding to see Lillian, and Melissa and her husband had stood in their way.

Barbara Jones had always been aggressive. After years as the revered Mrs. Smith, she was not about to let some commoner defy her, especially when she was Lillian’s rightful grandmother. The two sides had started arguing. Barbara had accused Melissa and her husband of having no right to keep them from their grandchild. Melissa, who rarely argued, had been pushed to her limit by Barbara’s insults. The Smiths had ignored Lillian for years, refusing to even acknowledge her existence. Now that she was better, they had the gall to show up and demand to see her. How could they be so shameless?

Barbara, used to getting her own way, had ignored their protests and tried to grab Lillian as she walked out of the school. When Melissa tried to stop her, Barbara had pushed her, causing her to fall and injure her back.
