It was the first time the old man had taken such an irrevocable stance. A frown creased Dennis’s brow. “Don’t use yourself to threaten me.”
The elder Mr. Williams’s face was a stony mask. “I do not make idle threats. As long as I am alive, you will not have my blessing. She will never set foot in the Williams family home. If you can’t let her go, you can keep her as a mistress. In the meantime, I will arrange a suitable marriage for you. You can do as you please after I’m dead.”
The words were brutally harsh. Even Douglas and Charlotte couldn't stay silent any longer.
“Dad,” Douglas said, his voice placating, “you’ve always said that children should be left to find their own happiness. Dennis has finally found someone he loves. Why must you…”
“Silence!” the old man roared.
Fearing for his father’s health, Douglas fell silent.
Dennis looked at his grandfather, his expression unreadable, a chilling coldness in his eyes. The old man stared back, unflinching. The air in the room was thick with tension, so heavy that the others could barely breathe. They were terrified that one wrong word would cause an irreparable rift. In some ways, the grandfather and grandson were very much alike.
Audrey was frantic. She wanted her brother to be happy with the woman he loved, but she also wanted her grandfather to be healthy and content. The thought of her family turning against each other was unbearable. What could she do? Maybe she could fake a heart problem to break the tension.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, she heard her brother speak, his voice calm and even. “You’re right, Grandpa. There are many wonderful women in the world. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And in my eyes, Camila Davis is the best. What others see as her flaws, I see as insignificant. Those are just labels imposed on her by a judgmental world. She is the purest, most genuine person I have ever known. And when you say I can marry anyone but her, you are mistaken. The truth is, I can only marry her. And I can tell you why.”
His words piqued the curiosity of Douglas and Charlotte. The old man also looked at him, waiting to see how he would try to convince him.
Dennis was prepared. He calmly placed a file on the table in front of his grandfather.
The elder Mr. Williams frowned. “What is this?”
“See for yourself,” Dennis said.
With that, Dennis put down his cup, stood up, and walked out, leaving the stunned family members in his wake. The elder Mr. Williams looked as if he had aged ten years in a matter of minutes.
Dennis was already outside. He had done what he needed to do. Now, he just had to wait and see the results. As he was getting into his car, Audrey came running out after him.
“Brother! Wait!” She pulled open the car door and slid into the back seat.
Dennis leaned back, resting his chin on his hand. “What is it?” he asked, seeing her hesitant expression.
Audrey struggled for a moment, unsure whether to be sad or something else. “That… that report,” she finally managed to say. “Is it real?” As his sister, she didn’t want to believe it was true.
Dennis gave her a wry smile. “What do you think?”
