Audrey Williams went with him. Ever since the night of the ball, the elder Mr. Williams had repeatedly summoned Dennis home, but he had always found an excuse. This had greatly displeased the old man. Audrey knew about it, and she could guess what her grandfather wanted to talk about. It had to be about Camila. Worried, she decided to tag along.
When they entered the house, Douglas Williams and Charlotte Kelly were also there. After greeting his uncle and aunt, Dennis turned to the patriarch, who was sitting ramrod straight in the living room.
“You wanted to see me?”
The elder Mr. Williams’s tone was sharp. “So you still know the way back.”
Dennis sat down beside him, unperturbed. “Of course. The roads haven't changed. Besides, I knew it wasn't anything urgent. Your health is constantly monitored, and I’m kept fully informed.”
The old man’s face darkened. His grandson’s intelligence was a double-edged sword. Nothing escaped his notice. Every time he urgently summoned him, Dennis would arrive looking completely unruffled. Annoyed, the elder Mr. Williams fell silent.
Dennis knew exactly what was bothering him, but he remained calm, broaching the subject himself. “You’re still unwilling to change your mind?”
“I can admit she’s exceptional,” the old man said coldly. “But she is not the right woman for you.”
“Whether she’s right or not is for me to decide,” Dennis retorted. “I’m the one who will be living with her, not you.”
It wasn’t the first time they had had this argument, but the old man still wasn’t used to his grandson’s defiance. “You stubborn boy! Even if she’s perfect, she has a child! And the child’s biological father is still in the picture. Do you really think that child will ever accept you as a father? And that ball the other night, do you think I don't know what happened? The Smith family was there. Can’t you see why? A marriage of that many years isn’t something that can be easily severed, especially not when there’s a blood tie!”
“Grandpa…” Audrey started to protest, but Douglas and Charlotte gently pulled her back. They knew the old man’s temper. If everyone sided with Dennis, it would only make him angrier. Though they remained silent, they weren't worried about Dennis. They trusted he could handle this himself.
After looking at the photos, Dennis’s expression remained unchanged. “Camila can’t control what the Smith family does. She can only control herself, and she will not go back. Your attempts to stir up trouble between us are pointless.”
Seeing that his tactic had failed, the old man’s face flushed with anger. “Must you be with her?”
Dennis nodded, his gaze steady. “I believe I’ve already given you my answer.”
The old man slammed his hand on the table. “What if I insist you marry someone else? Dennis, your mother is gone. It is my duty to look out for you. This decision is a mistake! There are so many wonderful women in the world. You can marry anyone, but not her! If you insist on being with her, then I will fight you with every last breath I have!”
