After checking in, Camila headed back to the lab. Benjamin Torres was already there, hard at work. When he saw her, he immediately put down his papers, his face lighting up with excitement and relief. “Camila, you’re back! I was worried you wouldn’t return to the team.”
“Why would you think that?” she asked, confused.
Benjamin rubbed the back of his neck, looking a bit awkward. “Because of what happened with Harper… I just thought…”
Camila understood. She shook her head. “Don’t worry. I’m not the type to mix personal feelings with my professional life. Harper is Harper. I’m not going to abandon my own ambitions because of what she did. In this institute, my only focus is on how to make our team more efficient and successful. Besides, you and I have been working together for a while now. We have a good rhythm. If I had to start over with a new partner, it would take time to adjust, and it wouldn’t be as productive, right?”
Benjamin let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. “You’re right.” He was relieved that her attitude toward him hadn’t changed, that she didn’t blame him for what Harper and Lavinia had done. But he knew he wasn’t entirely blameless. He still owed her an apology.
“I’m sorry,” he said sincerely. “You were dragged into this mess because of me. If it weren’t for me, Harper might not have…”
Camila waved his apology away. “It’s over, Benjamin. You already apologized in your message. Let’s not bring it up again. Harper has been punished, and I don’t want to dwell on unpleasant things. Let’s just move on, okay? Instead of talking about the past, let’s talk about our work. Has the new team member arrived yet?”
Benjamin, reassured, quickly shifted back into professional mode. “Not yet. I haven’t seen anyone.”
Just as he said that, there was a knock on the door. Thinking it must be the new team member, Camila turned around. The face she saw was a familiar one.
“Jarvis Peters?” she exclaimed, surprised. “What are you doing here? Are you the new team member?”
Camila had been slightly worried about the time it would take to integrate a new team member, but with Jarvis, that wouldn’t be a problem. They had already collaborated on research and experiments and were familiar with each other’s methods. With her leading the team, Jarvis and Benjamin would be able to adapt to each other’s rhythms quickly.
Benjamin was surprised by Jarvis’s arrival but welcomed him warmly. The stronger the team members, the more efficient their work would be. Although both of them were younger than him, their talent was undeniable.
Now that the team was assembled, Camila wasted no time. She immediately called a meeting to assign tasks and review the new project from management. The day flew by in a blur of activity.
Meanwhile, Dennis returned to the Smith Group to handle some urgent matters. As evening approached, he finally made his way home.
