The thought made her flush with embarrassment. Three whole days! She used to see people online talking about things like this and thought it was an absurd exaggeration. Now that she had experienced it firsthand, she knew it wasn’t an exaggeration at all. If she hadn’t put her foot down and protested, Dennis probably wouldn't have let her out of the bedroom. And judging by his current relaxed demeanor, he clearly still had plenty of energy to spare. Meanwhile, she felt like her bones were about to fall apart.
She didn't even know how she was going to face her parents tonight. And most importantly, they had just started to accept Dennis, and now he had gone and proven himself to be so reckless and unrestrained! Would his standing with them plummet back to zero? The thought made her forehead crease with worry.
Dennis saw her distressed expression and couldn’t resist. He tilted her chin up and gave her a playful kiss. “Don’t look so tormented. Trust me, Mr. and Mrs. Davis will be fine. And even if they are angry, I’ll win them over. Okay?”
Camila looked up at him. “Are you sure?”
“Positive,” he nodded, his expression serious. “You have to have faith in a psychologist’s powers of persuasion.”
Thinking about his capabilities, Camila had no choice but to trust him. No matter how much she worried, the problem still needed to be solved. And psychological manipulation happened to be his specialty. If he could treat Lillian and seduce her, then winning over her parents should be a piece of cake. With that thought, she decided to leave the matter in his hands.
While they talked, Camila finished dressing and adjusted Dennis’s tie. Then they went downstairs for breakfast. Afterward, Dennis personally drove her to the research institute before heading to the Smith Group himself.
After nearly a month away, returning felt strangely nostalgic. She went first to her supervisor’s office to report in and apologize for not returning to work sooner.
Her answer pleased Abner, a look of satisfaction on his face. Camila’s rational, big-picture attitude was exactly what the institute valued. “In that case, you’ll return to your original team. Keep up the good work. Camila, I have great faith in your abilities, and I look forward to seeing what you do next. And don’t worry, we will not allow a situation like what happened with your team to ever happen again.”
“I hope so,” Camila said. She really didn’t want to deal with another colleague like Harper Thompson.
Abner smiled. “You don’t have to hope. It’s a certainty. A new regulation was passed yesterday. If any team member is suspected of malicious competition, anyone can report it, and an investigative team will intervene. If a colleague is found to have framed someone or sabotaged a project, the minimum penalty is termination. For more serious offenses, they will be blacklisted from the entire industry. There will be no leniency.”
Now that was a satisfactory resolution. She knew this was the institute’s way of making things right with her and sending a clear warning to everyone else. Every person who worked here poured their heart and soul into their research. While some might have gloated over her misfortune, others were surely worried. If it could happen to her, it could happen to them. The institute’s new policy was a clear message: this was not a place for personal vendettas. It was a way to restore everyone’s peace of mind.
