Mason had been dealing with her hysterics all day. It was late, and his patience was wearing thin. “Would you please just calm down?” he said, exhausted. He privately thought that if Barbara hadn't been running her mouth, none of this would have happened, but saying so would only make things worse.
His attempt to placate her failed spectacularly. “How can I calm down?” she cried. “Look at me!” The deep cut, the bleeding, the prospect of a permanent scar—it all fueled her rage. “That Dennis Williams is completely lawless! I will not let this go!”
Jordan’s face had been a thundercloud all evening. Hearing his mother’s continued tirade, his own temper flared. “Enough! How long are you going to keep this up? What will screaming accomplish?!”
Barbara was stunned. Not only was her son not siding with her, he was yelling at her. “Why are you yelling at me?! I’m the one who’s hurt! Camila Davis sicced that man on me, and I’m not allowed to say anything? This is all your fault for being so lenient with her!”
Jordan’s expression grew even darker. After his mother had been admitted, he had immediately sent Nathan Gates to investigate. He hadn’t expected the hospital to cooperate, but surprisingly, they had provided the security footage. The result, however, was a dead end. The video showed nothing. Just a split second before the injury, a tiny white glint of light was visible, but it vanished instantly. There was no weapon, no clear assailant.
They had been played, and there was nothing they could do about it.
The more she thought, the angrier she became. “We are willing to have her back,” she said, clutching her throbbing lip. “She should be grateful and come home immediately, heal your leg, and start acting like a proper wife. But look at her now! What has she become?”
