“So what?” Jordan cut her off coldly. “If it makes her feel better, if it convinces her to come back to me, then I will accept any revenge she deems necessary!”
“Are you insane?!” Barbara cried, her face a mask of disbelief. “Jordan, you are the CEO of the Smith Group! You are a man of immense status. Why are you letting Camila Davis walk all over you?”
Nathan nearly rolled his eyes. He spoke up again. “Mrs. Smith, you’re mistaken again. So what if the Smiths are the wealthiest family in the world? Ms. Davis has never cared about your family’s fortune. You all assumed she married the President for money, that she would never give up her position as Mrs. Smith. But she was the one who asked for the divorce, and she left with nothing—not a single penny from your family. You don’t know her at all. She is not a materialistic person. During her years with your family, she hardly ever used your money. The expensive clothes and jewelry she owned were all ordered by the elder Mrs. Smith, delivered seasonally like a chore. She rarely wore any of it. She wore a simple work uniform at the Smith Group and spent the rest of her time at home with Lillian. She barely attended any high-society events. Anyone else with access to the latest designer collections would have been showing them off everywhere. Did she ever do that? And look at her now. She has everything she could ever want—money, a career, influence. If she truly cared about what she had in Harrisburg, why would she have taken Lillian and moved so far away? The answer is simple: she never wanted to go back.”
“You…” Barbara was speechless with rage. Each of Nathan’s words was like a needle, piercing her with the truth of her past mistakes. How dare he? Camila was one thing, but Nathan was just an employee, a dog her son kept. How dare he lecture her repeatedly?
As if reading her mind, Nathan preempted her. “I know, you’re about to tell me it’s not my place to speak. But as an outsider and your employee, it is my duty to inform you of the current situation. The Smith family name is not an asset here. You’ve just arrived in Cabinda, so you may not be aware of Ms. Davis’s current network and influence. Even without Mr. Williams, what she has built for herself is easily on par with the Smith family. If you truly want to win her back, you had better drop the arrogant attitude. Otherwise, you’re just wasting your time.”
In the eyes of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Camila was not a daughter-in-law to be welcomed back. She was just an asset to be acquired.
