Nathan’s guess was spot on. A major reason the Smiths had come to Cabinda was an anonymous letter detailing just how successful Camila had become. At first, they were skeptical, but the letter was so thorough, so filled with shocking details, that they had no choice but to believe it.
Once the shock wore off, Mason and Barbara began to plot. If they could bring Camila’s network under the Smith umbrella, the benefits would be enormous. They could potentially double the family’s assets in a short period.
Their plan was simple. They assumed that Camila, still hopelessly in love with their son, would jump at the chance to return to the Smith family.
But reality had been a rude awakening. Not only did Camila refuse, but she treated their son with utter disdain. The anonymous photos they’d received, showing Camila’s cold indifference toward Jordan, had stoked Barbara’s fury. After a brief discussion, she and Mason had rushed to Cabinda, intending to force Camila into a reconciliation, even if it meant taking Lillian back to Harrisburg by force. They were certain Camila would follow.
But their plan had gone awry from the start. They hadn't expected to run into Camila’s parents outside the school, nor had they anticipated the ensuing conflict that had left Barbara disfigured. It was a disastrous miscalculation.
Now, even a mere assistant dared to talk back to her. With nowhere else to direct her anger, Barbara turned on Nathan. “Jordan,” she said to her son, “this assistant of yours has no sense of propriety. He has repeatedly overstepped his bounds. You need to put him in his place before he starts thinking he can walk all over you.”
With that, he couldn’t stand another moment in the suffocating room. He pressed a button on his wheelchair, turned, and left.
