Aaron took the luggage, and Camila went to help her mother out of the room. As they walked down the hallway, she noticed the expensive supplements still sitting on the bench.
“I wonder which patient left those here,” she mused.
Jerry’s brow furrowed at the sight of them. “Why are those things still here?”
Melissa scoffed. “Such hypocrisy.”
Camila immediately understood who they were from. Her expression hardened. “Did they come back to harass you, Mom?”
“No, not really,” Jerry said. “Just the assistant came by, but the men Dennis posted outside stopped him.”
Relieved, Camila walked over, picked up the bags, and dropped them straight into a nearby trash can. Just as her mother had said, they had no need for insincere, belated gestures of concern.
Afterward, she took her mother’s arm again. “Let’s go home.”
Her parents said no more, and the group left the hospital.
As they departed, none of them noticed Jordan Smith standing around the corner, his gaze fixed on the discarded items in the trash can, a bitter, dazed look in his eyes. He never thought the day would come when a gift from him would be thrown away like garbage.
So this is what it felt like to be discarded.
Nathan, standing silently behind him, was not surprised. After a moment, his phone rang. He stepped aside to take the call. After a brief conversation, he returned to Jordan.
“Sir, it was a lawyer from Dennis Williams’s office. They want to discuss visitation arrangements for Lillian.”
Jordan’s brow twitched. “He certainly works fast,” he said, his tone unreadable.
Nathan didn’t comment, simply adding, “He’s affiliated with Cabinda’s top law firm and has hired their best attorney for this type of case. Apparently, this lawyer has never lost. Do you wish to meet with them personally?”
A cold smile touched Jordan’s lips. “Why wouldn’t I?”
Pleased by her trust, Dennis stroked her hair. “In that case, just wait for my news.”
Camila smiled. “Okay.”
They held hands for a moment longer before Dennis glanced at the time. “It’s getting late. You should get ready for the institute. I’ll drop you off on my way. I’ve also arranged for a reliable caregiver to come and help Susan with your mother so you can work without worrying.”
“Okay!” Camila’s eyes curved into happy crescents. She stood on her tiptoes and gave him a quick kiss. “A reward for always taking such good care of me.”
Aaron, caught in the crossfire of their affection, discreetly looked away.
Dennis’s gaze deepened. He pulled her closer, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss that left them red and swollen. “This,” he murmured against her mouth, “is a reward.”
Camila’s cheeks flushed. She shot him a playful glare. There were other people around, after all. He could have been a little more discreet.
