Dennis just smiled and brushed his thumb against her blushing cheek. “Go on.”
Camila nodded and quickly gathered her things. Soon, she and Dennis were on their way to the research institute. After saying goodbye, she went straight to her lab, where she was surprised to find her mentor.
“Mentor, what are you doing here?”
The old man looked up. “I heard about what happened with your mother yesterday, so I came to check on you. How is she? Is it serious?”
Camila shook her head. “She’s fine, just a pulled muscle. The scans were clear. I’ll be taking care of her recovery, so please don’t worry.”
He seemed relieved but still annoyed. “I can’t believe the nerve of the Smith family. So graceless and unable to let go. So much for being the top family in Harrisburg. It’s a good thing you divorced him. That Smith boy is no good—nothing at all like Dennis Williams.”
Jordan had only ever brought her pain. Dennis, on the other hand, though from a similarly privileged background, knew how to respect and cherish a person. He always protected her. The contrast was undeniable.
Camila couldn't help but smile. “You seem to have a very high opinion of him.”
Her mentor snorted. “I am not a superficial man. To judge a person’s character, you don’t listen to what they say; you watch what they do. Dennis’s actions speak for themselves. Everything he has done for you has been impeccable, more thoughtful than even I could have imagined. What is there to criticize? Not to mention, since you’ve been with him, your career and your life have only gotten better, unlike before when you had to give up your work entirely. That is the kind of man worth spending your life with. If you had listened to me back then instead of being so stubborn, you could have saved yourself a lot of heartache.”
“I’m here to report on my progress!” she announced, plopping down on the sofa with a stack of files.
Dennis raised an eyebrow. “Go on.”
“Okay, so after you left the other day,” she began, “the old man was still skeptical. He thought you were tricking him and wanted to ask some doctors he knew.”
