Of course, Audrey didn't believe a word of it. She looked at Cynthia, her feelings a complicated mix. Did Cynthia really see her as some naive child who couldn't think for herself?
Cynthia, oblivious to Audrey's shifting mood, saw her silence as a sign of agreement and pressed on. "Audrey, I truly don't think Camila Davis is right for Dennis. She's divorced, yet she's using his connections to build her own network in Cabinda. You all think she has genuine feelings for him, but behind your backs, she's still entangled with the Smith family. She doesn't love Dennis. Back then, she was so desperately in love with her ex-husband that she ruined her own future just to marry into his family. It hasn't been that long since the divorce. How could she possibly be over a man she loved that much and be genuinely in love with Dennis?
"And now her ex-husband is here trying to win her back! Given her history with him, her feelings are bound to waver. They have a daughter together—that's a bond that can never be broken. Think about it. If Dennis stays with her under these circumstances, is it fair to him? What happens if Camila eventually goes back to her ex? What will that make Dennis? He'll become the laughingstock of all of Cabinda! Is that a future you want to see, Audrey?"
Audrey finally understood. Cynthia had invited her out today for a full-scale brainwashing session. It was almost funny. What gave Cynthia the impression that she was a naive little fool who could be so easily swayed? And what was with this relentless determination to break up her brother and Camila?
Audrey's gaze toward Cynthia grew cool. So much for being in love with her brother. She didn't understand his thoughts, his feelings, or even the kind of person he was. Cynthia, she realized with a flicker of irony, was the one who was truly unworthy of him.
But Audrey didn't let any of this show. Instead of arguing, she decided to play along. If Cynthia was this desperate to slander Camila to her face, who knew what other underhanded tricks she might try? It was better to keep her close.
"You know, Cynthia, you have a point," Audrey said, her voice carefully neutral. "So… what do you want me to do?"
Cynthia's eyes lit up. She knew it! Audrey was just like all the other society girls—she believed Camila Davis was beneath her brother. A pampered princess like Audrey, who had lived her whole life showered with praise, would be even more sensitive about her family's reputation. She would never accept someone with Camila's tainted past.
Cynthia gripped her hand tightly. "You don't have to do much. Just try to persuade Dennis to see reason, to not get in any deeper with a woman like that. I have to admit, Camila is cunning. She has her ways of seducing men. Ever since Dennis got with her, all his attention has been on her. Before, he barely had time for any other girls because he was always doting on you, his little sister. But now? He'd rather parade around town with Camila's daughter than spend time with his own family. He doesn't care about you like he used to. He doesn't put you first anymore. You've noticed it too, haven't you?"
