“You know perfectly well that Sandra and Jordan are business partners. They’re only here together because of work—and yet you just had to show up and cause a scene!”
Lucas Smith’s voice rose above the hum of the gala, drawing the attention of everyone nearby.
“You’re just trying to embarrass Jordan, aren’t you? And while you’re at it, you want to drag Sandra’s name through the mud. Honestly, Camila, how could someone from the Smith family be so utterly clueless and petty?”
The accusation rang out, and though it was thinly veiled, Lucas was clearly trying to clear Jordan Smith and Sandra Taylor of any rumors about an affair.
Camila Davis had met her share of sycophants before, but Lucas? He was on a whole new level.
Still, she had to admit—his words worked. The people in the room who’d been whispering about Sandra suddenly changed their tune.
“Oh, so it was just us jumping to conclusions… Ms. Taylor and Mr. Smith aren’t like that?”
“Well, their companies did announce a joint venture in the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Taylor even started working at Smith Enterprises herself. Of course they’re always seen together.”
“In that case, the wife really has no class—showing up here to cause trouble. Didn’t Lucas say she snuck in with a stolen invitation?”
“The Harris family won’t tolerate that kind of thing, will they?”
“Someone should show her out. I thought she looked pretty before, but now she’s just embarrassing herself…”
The whispers swirled, and Camila could feel the change in the air. Where she’d been greeted with polite curiosity, now she was being dismissed and judged.
Jordan Smith’s face darkened, his patience thinning. “Camila Davis, that’s enough. This isn’t the place for your drama. Leave. Now.”
Camila stared him down, her voice icy. She’d asked for a divorce last night, had made her intentions clear. Did he really think she was just trying to get his attention?
Judging by his expression, he did.
She almost laughed. Typical.
Lucas, out of patience, muttered, “Jordan, Sandra, let’s not waste any more time. Just call security and get her out of here. The Smith family doesn’t need this circus.”
He turned and waved down a security guard, saying loudly, “This woman isn’t on the guest list. She snuck in with a fake invitation. Please escort her out and save our guests any more embarrassment.”
