Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 871

Of course, Audrey had no intention of going.

She shook her head, putting on a regretful expression. "I can't tonight, I already have plans. Maybe next time?" Cynthia clearly didn't know her at all. After so many years studying abroad, she was sick of Western food. Besides, she had a hard-won date with Walter Wilson.

Cynthia didn't push. "Alright, next time then," she said, slightly disappointed. "Oh, wait, I have something for you!"

She walked to her car and pulled out several shopping bags. "These are for you, Charlotte, and Uncle Douglas," she announced happily.

For Audrey, there was a new designer handbag. For Charlotte, a high-end perfume. And for Douglas, a selection of expensive tea leaves, chosen to match his tastes.

But Audrey declined. "No, Cynthia, this is really too much. Please, keep them," she said gently. "I actually already have this bag. And my mom's been having sinus issues with the weather changing, so she can't wear any strong scents. As for the tea, Dennis has already brought home a huge supply. We have more than we can drink. It would be a waste. You should keep it for your uncle."

She looked at Cynthia and sighed. "Cynthia, you really don't have to be so formal with me. Like you said, we grew up together. But every time we go out, you give me something. If this continues, I won't feel comfortable going out with you anymore. If you want to see me again, please, take the gifts back."

Her reasoning seemed to make sense to Cynthia. After all, they would be family sooner or later. There was no need for such formalities.

Cynthia put the bags back in her car. "Alright, then. I won't be so formal with you next time. But since you turned down my gifts, the least you can do is let me give you a ride! I'll take you to the restaurant."

"Hi! Have you been waiting long?" Audrey bounced happily over to Walter.

He shook his head. "No, I just got here. Why were you with her?"

"Ugh, don't even get me started…" Audrey immediately launched into her story, pulling him by the arm as she complained about being subjected to a full afternoon of brainwashing. "Come on, let's get a table. We can talk while we eat."

"Sounds good," Walter agreed, and they headed inside, ordered a few of the restaurant's signature dishes, and Audrey continued her story without missing a beat.
