Hearing her daughter list off so many items, Camila looked a little surprised. “Lillian, you remembered quite a lot, didn’t you?” At her mommy’s praise, little Lillian lifted her chin proudly. “When I was looking, there were other uncles and aunties there too. They were talking about the history and stories behind the things, and I heard them, so I just remembered it all!” “Our Lillian is so smart!” Dennis praised her without hesitation, gently poking her soft cheek. Nathan wanted to praise her too, but he was mostly just astonished. He had been with her all morning, and there were things that even he, an adult, hadn't observed so closely. He never would have guessed that Lillian had such a sharp memory, not only taking everything in but remembering it all. After praising the little one, Dennis put his things away. “Alright, head back and finish your lunch now. Make sure you eat until you’re full!” “Okay, I will! I’ll go back with Nathan now!” With that, the little girl waved goodbye to them. Camila and Dennis watched her go before turning back into their private room. As Nathan walked back, his mind was replaying the scene he had just witnessed. He had to admit, what he saw was what a real family of three should look like. The way Mr. Williams cared for Lillian was like any ordinary father with his daughter, a stark contrast to his own boss's cold demeanor. Compared to that warm scene, the distance between his boss and Lillian felt vast and unbridgeable. Lillian’s attitude towards her biological father versus the man she called ‘Daddy’ was like night and day. Before they returned to the room, Nathan couldn’t resist asking the little girl, “Lillian, can I ask you a question?” Lillian tilted her head up at him. “What is it? You can ask!” Nathan chose his words carefully. “Mr. Williams… I mean, your daddy. Why does he carry wet wipes with him?” Lillian didn't hide anything. “Because when we go out to play, my hands get dirty easily,” she answered honestly. “Sometimes we can’t find a place to wash them, so Daddy brings wipes with him!” Nathan was surprised but continued, “Did your mommy tell him to do that?” Lillian shook her head. “Nope, Daddy does it all by himself! My daddy is amazing. His pockets are like magic; he can always pull out things that Mommy and I need. He has wipes, bandages, and even candy and chocolate… Mommy has low blood sugar, and Daddy says if it gets bad, she could faint. If no one is around, it could be dangerous, so he always carries sweet candies just in case! It’s not just Daddy; Mommy and I have candy with us too! Daddy bought it all specially for us!” When the little girl spoke of her daddy, her expression was filled with pride. Anyone who didn't know better would have thought he was her real father. After hearing her explanation, Nathan was at a loss for words. All that remained was a silent prayer for Mr. Smith. It was true what they said: comparison is the thief of joy. He had already lost in the game of love. Now, when compared to the other father's actions, what did his boss have left to compete with? Whether it was romantic love or fatherly affection, he was utterly and completely outmatched.
