Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 883

Nathan Gates was sure this wasn't just him boosting the competition's morale at his boss's expense. He'd bet his career that Mr. Smith had no idea Ms. Davis had low blood sugar, nor would he ever think to carry emergency supplies for a child in his pocket. With a heavy heart, Nathan escorted them back to the private room to continue their meal, saying nothing to Mr. Smith about what had just happened. Meanwhile, in another private room, Camila Davis was feeling a little worried. After trailing the little one all morning, she had seen how her daughter interacted with Jordan Smith. Even from a distance, the atmosphere between them was telling. A man like Jordan Smith would never truly humble himself, even if he was trying to get closer to his child. After watching them for hours, she noticed their interactions were even less natural than Lillian's were with Nathan Gates. Dennis Williams noticed she was distracted and asked, “What’s wrong?” Camila sighed. “I’m a bit worried about Lillian.” She explained her concerns, adding, “I don’t think they’re getting along well. The impact Jordan Smith had on Lillian in the past is still there.” Although their meeting earlier was brief, Camila had clearly seen a shift in the little one's expression the moment they stepped out and saw her. Her face transformed from quiet reservation to lively animation, an unmistakable joy she couldn’t hide. Dennis took her hand. “That impact is inevitable,” he said gently. “Years of neglect don't disappear overnight. Even though Lillian’s autism has been treated, she’ll still carry those bad memories. And with her memory being so sharp, she’ll probably remember some things for the rest of her life. But don’t worry, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.” Camila looked up at him. “What do you mean?” Dennis calmly reassured her, “Why do you think I agreed to let her see Smith? It’s because I want her to overcome this problem—to overcome the influence he has on her. That’s the best way to resolve her psychological issues. This is the final stage of her therapy. If she can conquer this, Lillian will be truly reborn.” Camila instantly understood his intention. In the past, Jordan Smith’s coldness and neglect had cast a huge shadow over Lillian, which was why she chose to escape by pretending to have amnesia. Now that the pretense was over, Dennis was teaching her to face that shadow head-on. This way, even if she faced Jordan Smith’s neglect, coldness, or anger in the future, it wouldn't bother her anymore. She would have the courage to handle it. Camila hadn’t realized that Dennis had such a thoughtful motive behind the whole visitation rights issue. As she expected, her Dennis never did anything without a deeper purpose, especially when it came to her and Lillian. He always put so much thought into solving their problems. How could she not be moved by such a wonderful man? How could she not love him more? Camila felt a strong urge to kiss him right then and there. But considering they were in the middle of a meal, she thought better of it and let the impulse pass. Dennis, however, saw the momentary sparkle in her eyes and seemed to read her mind. He let out a low chuckle, his voice a deep rumble as he gently caressed her earlobe. “No rush,” he whispered seductively. “You can make it up to me when we get home.”
