The word ‘heir’ struck the elder Mr. Williams like a bolt of lightning, a heavy stone settling in his chest. His wonderful grandson… how could this have happened to him?
Audrey, seeing his distress, pressed on. “Nothing else matters as much as Jordan’s dignity. You know his personality. Do you think he’d want anyone to know about this? As far as I’m concerned, no one is more important than Jordan!”
The elder Mr. Williams understood his granddaughter’s point. After a long silence, he finally nodded. “You’re right. No one is more important than Jordan. I’ll find the right time to resolve this.” He had been the one to promise the Lee family a marriage; it was his responsibility to explain the situation to them personally.
Hearing this, Audrey knew her mission was accomplished. Her brother’s gift of a new sports car had been well-earned. She softened her approach, linking her arm through her grandfather’s and cooing, “You barely ate anything tonight. How about I make you a late-night snack? Let’s not dwell on unhappy things. In a few days, I’ll take you to a concert, and I have a surprise for you!”
The old man’s somber mood lifted at his granddaughter’s affectionate display, the gloom in his heart dissipating. “Alright, I’ll hold you to that. I’m curious to see what surprise you have in store for your old grandpa.”
Audrey giggled. “It’s a secret for now. You’ll just have to wait and see!”
His gaze darkened. “Keep an eye on her for me,” he instructed Audrey. “Your social circles are closer. I hope her provocations are just empty words.” A chilling edge crept into his voice as he spoke.
Audrey sensed the underlying meaning in her brother’s words. What was he implying? Her mind raced. She recalled the various humiliations and slanders Camila had endured since arriving in Cabinda. Logically, no one knew Camila well enough to hate her so intensely. Jealousy over her relationship with Dennis might lead to gossip, but not such a widespread campaign of ostracism and insults.
On the surface, it had all seemed to be Lavinia Roberts’s doing. But who could say for sure that Cynthia hadn’t played a part, fanning the flames from the shadows?
