Lillian chirped back in her sweet, childish voice, “I did! So, so much!”
“Really?” Audrey Williams was overjoyed. She nuzzled the little girl affectionately and said, “Lillian, you have that sweet baby smell. Aunt Audrey just loves it!”
Lillian squirmed and giggled, tickled by the attention. The elder Mr. Williams watched them nervously, his hands hovering protectively near Camilla. “Be careful, you two,” he cautioned. “I don’t want you both tumbling over.”
Lillian took the opportunity to lean against her great-grandfather, showing no shyness at all. “Great-grandpa Williams, save me!” she squealed with laughter.
The elder Mr. Williams’s heart swelled with joy hearing her call him that. He was about to play along when a stunned voice cut through the air from behind them. “Grandpa Williams? Audrey?”
The laughter died down as they all turned to see Cynthia Lee standing there, with Natalie beside her. Both women were staring, their eyes wide with disbelief at the scene before them.
Cynthia, in particular, felt as if she were dreaming. If she remembered correctly, Grandpa Williams despised Camila Davis and her child. He would never accept them! But now… could someone please tell her what was going on?
Why was Audrey Williams playing with Camila Davis’s daughter and letting the child call her ‘Aunt Audrey’? And why was the elder Mr. Williams allowing that… that child to call him ‘Great-grandpa Williams’?
