Sylvara blinked several times, thrown completely off by how fast the conversation had turned. It took her a while to speak. “So when they eat a Grower, it’s not just to get stronger, right?”

Agares’ mouth tightened. The darkness in his eyes grew heavier. “Of course not. Eating one of you doesn’t just make them stronger. It lets their next generation evolve beyond what they are now.

“The higher the Grower’s level, the closer their offspring become to humans. Especially, someone like you- a Level 7 Healer. You’re one of a kind across every species. If they ate you, there’s a real chance they’d create a new queen.”

Sylvara froze.

So she wasn’t just Rheys’s personal snack.

The entire Swarmborn race wanted her on their menu.

Eat her, and they might spawn a new queen?

For God’s sake.

She couldn’t even comprehend the insanity of it.

She coughed softly and edged a little closer to her bargain-bin husband, “So … just out of curiosity, how many of these bugs are there exactly?”

A faint spark of amusement crossed Agares’ eyes. “The mid-tier ones-the ones that can almost pass for human-number around five billion. The lower-tier ones, the actual bugs, are beyond counting. Over ten billion wouldn’t be far off. About 100 million for the high-tiers. Those just below Rheys’ level number a few million.

“Rheys’s mental energy and reproductive potential are said to be second only to the queen. But he’s never mated with any of the low-fertility females.”

Perfect.

Absolutely perfect. Life had officially hit rock bottom.

She now had to hide her Level 7 Plant Healer identity or end up locked away as a breeder.

She couldn’t let her bargain-bin husband find out she was his wife, or she’d lose the force she was clinging

And if anyone learned her fertility value was a perfect hundred, she’d be hauled off to some lab for “pairing experiments.”

Now she was apparently a five-star meal to a swarm of aliens. A literal dish served on the universe’s most cursed buffet.

Life was hell.

No other word for it.

Fuck this shit!

“So, Your Highness,” she asked, her voice trembling just a little, “how do I stop them from smelling me?” Should I cover myself in something rotten? Like surstromming? But I’ve never seen anything like that.

“Don’t be afraid.” Agares’s calm, grounded voice carried through the air. “Rheys probably slipped in after that lucky attack they made on the Kolar planet earlier. We’ll finish them off today.

“From now on, I’ll personally guard the Kolar planet. This won’t happen again. As long as you stay within the Troya Empire, you’ll never have to worry about the Swarmborn-or ending up as their next meal.”

“Alright. I promise I’ll stay put.”

Sylvara had barely gotten the words out when Rheys’ severed head shot up from the pile of brittle leaves. It hung in midair, gold eyes bleeding down his mangled face. His twisted mouth opened wide as he snarled, his voice dripping with rage. “I only wanted one bite. Just one small bite. You wouldn’t let me. And now you’re making me do this.”

Sylvara shoved her saber into Agares’s hand. A green Smokewillow blade appeared in her grasp as she met those glowing eyes. “Baby, you were the one who wouldn’t show me your real face. How is that my fault?”

Rheys’s headless body jerked to life. It reached out, snatched the floating head, and crushed it in its fist like an angry child destroying a toy. “Your fault. Your fault. It’s all your fault.”

Blood burst from the shattered head, and the body absorbed it like a sponge.

The sound that followed was sharp and wet, echoing through the clearing.

Rheys’ bare torso split open across the back, and a pair of massive black bone wings tore through the skin. They stretched several yards wide, their jagged edges gleaming under the dim light.

When they opened fully, the air filled with the heavy thrumming sound of flapping bone.

Agares raised his arm and pulled Sylvara behind him again.

Sylvara had never seen a bug transform before. She gripped his arm tightly, curiosity lighting up her eyes as she rose on her toes to get a better look. “Your Highness, what kind of bug is Rheys?”

Agares’ arm dropped suddenly, as if her touch had burned him.

Without his support, Sylvara stumbled forward a step and looked up at him. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” The light orb in Agares’ hand flared brighter, his voice low and rough. “Rheys is a black, dominant species with enormous double-boned wings. He resembles a scorpion-type creature.

“I’ve seen his true form once. Even the Troya Empire doesn’t have a specimen like him. We still can’t identify what kind of species he belongs to. His body length is around 100 feet.”
