Sylvara stared at him for a moment.

Her bargain-bin husband suddenly looked darker. Like there was something cold and vicious simmering beneath that calm exterior.
“You’re too confident, liar,” Rheys hissed, dragging her focus back.
He wanted her to know that she was the soon-to-be victim here.
She blinked innocently. “You’ve got that wrong. Confidence isn’t really my thing.”
Before he could react, she squeezed his hand tighter. Her mental energy pulsed through her fingers, wrapping around his arm and locking his body in place.
With a firm twist, she peeled his hand off her neck and snapped one of his fingers. The sharp crack echoed. She broke another just as easily. “Baby, I can’t stand when people grab my throat,” she said sweetly. “Sorry about this, but since your head grows back and you’ve got wings, I’m guessing losing a hand won’t matter much, right?”
Her glowing hand sliced clean through his wrist, severing the one that had been choking her.
Before he could move, she slammed her fist into his chest with a force that split through flesh and bone.
Then she drove her hand into the open wound, digging through the slick heat of his chest cavity. Her fingers searched deep, but came up empty. There was no energy crystal inside.
That meant the Swarmborn weren’t zombies.
Only their hosts-the ones they infected-were. Those were the ones that carried the crystals.
“It hurts. I’m hurting.” Rheys’s voice broke, his face twisting as fast as a flipped switch. His golden-red eyes shimmered with tears. “I won’t eat you anymore. I’ll be good, I’ll listen to you. Just don’t make it hurt, please?”
Now he was a fragile, moody boy, completely unhinged.
Sylvara smiled, her voice razor-sharp. “And why should I care about that?”
She lifted her leg and kicked him hard, sending him crashing into the dirt.
Before he could recover, she stepped forward and slammed her boot onto his pale, perfect face. She pressed down until his head sank into the wet mud and scattered leaves.
“Baby, you don’t just decide when you eat or when you don’t. If you don’t pick a lane, that leaves no point for anyone else, does it?”
Right then, the severed hand he’d lost began to grow back.
Flesh reformed in seconds, smooth and pure like it had never been touched. His new hand shot up, gripping her ankle. From beneath the mud, he laughed-a low, unhinged sound. “You’re right, sweetheart. I can’t be both. So I’ll just stick to being the bad one.”

Finished
The instant he finished, his hand broke free from her mental energy’s hold. He jerked hard, throwing her off balance.
Sylvara hadn’t expected him to break her restraint. Her body tilted backward as she tried to regain control.
Rheys leapt up from the ground and lunged straight at her.
Sylvara narrowed her eyes, ready to strike back. But before she could move, a strong arm wrapped around her waist and lifted her off the ground.
Agares pulled her against him, spinning her out of harm’s way, his back now exposed to Rheys. That single motion left him open.
Rheys’ white hand morphed into a dark insect claw and slashed across Agares’ back. His armor ripped apart as blood burst through the gash.
Agares’ hold on Sylvara loosened. He turned fast and swung his saber in a sharp counterattack.
Rheys jumped back, and instead of his huge bone wings, a smaller pair of black wings unfolded from his back. He hovered in the air, blood dripping down his chest. With a wild grin that was both alluring and insane, he ran his fingers through his blood and smeared it over his pale lips. “I’m done playing. I’ll turn every single one of the 310 thousand people here into my Swarmborn army. Goodbye.”
He beat his wings and shot upward into the sky.
Agares immediately chased after him.
Sylvara sprinted right behind.
Then, without warning, Agares stopped.
He grabbed her arm, pulled her close, and forced his saber into her hands. His tone was sharp, commanding. “You stay here. Don’t follow me.”
Sylvara froze, staring up at him. Then she stepped closer, rising on her toes as her fingers brushed his torn
armor.
In seconds, the shredded flesh and broken metal knitted back together, smooth and whole again.
She pulled her hand away with a small, confident smile. “There. You’re good to go.”
Agares glanced sideways at her, his eyes darkening as they lingered on his mended shoulder. “Thank you.”
Then he turned and ran after Rheys.
Sylvara watched Agares sprint ahead. She balanced the saber in her hand, then flicked her wrist and sent it flying through the air. “Your Highness, your blade!”
