Rheys’s body stopped sparking with lightning. His face, pale and soft, turned ghostly white. His golden eyes locked on her, trembling with wounded emotion. “Liar. You said I was handsome. So why didn’t you touch me? Why did you run?”
Why didn’t I touch him?
Are you fucking mad? I don’t want to end up as your dinner!
Sylvara pointed at Agares. “Baby, I didn’t run. He’s your real enemy. If you’re that strong, prove it. Beat him, kill him, and I’ll go with you.”
Rheys’s pupils tightened. His voice softened into something naive, almost childlike. “You’re not lying? If I kill him, you’ll touch me, hold me, and go with me?”
Sylvara nodded seriously, her expression too calm to be genuine. “If you kill him, I’ll touch you, hold you, and go with you. Anything you want.”
A spark of joy flared in Rheys’s golden eyes before his face twisted into rage. “You liar! You don’t think I can kill him. That’s why you’re so confident!”
Teenage boys could be dramatic.
But a lovesick, murderous one? That was another level of trouble.
“Baby, villains die because they talk too much. Why are you still running your mouth?” Sylvara grinned, her tone teasing. “But if you really need an answer, then yeah, between you and him, I trust his strength more.”
“Then watch me. I’ll kill him.” Rheys’s golden eyes flared with fury. His enormous bone wings spread wide as he shot into the air, black hair streaming behind him like spilled ink. He went straight for Agares.
Agares launched upward, too, his saber blazing with mental energy. He swung with brutal precision.
Rheys’s arms morphed into black, armor-plated claws that gleamed under the light. He met Agares’s strike head-on.
The sound of clashing metal split the air, sending sparks flying.
Neither of them budged.
Rheys attacked again, his wings slicing through the air toward Agares with crushing force.
Agares twisted in midair and dove, narrowly avoiding the strike.
On the ground, Sylvara hurled Smokewillow down. It erupted upward like a living vine, bracing itself beneath Agares’s boots.
He pushed off hard, using it as leverage, and vaulted back into the sky, landing squarely on Rheys’s massive
wing.
Rheys staggered under the weight, spinning violently in an attempt to shake him off.

But Agares didn’t let go. His saber came down hard toward the smaller black wings beneath the bone ones.
The strike hit with a burst of sparks, but the fuzzy wings were just as strong as steel, untouched.
Smokewillow reacted again, darting upward like it had a will of its own, twisting toward Rheys’s legs to ensnare him.
Rheys dodged fast. His bone wings snapped shut, and his lean body plummeted straight toward Sylvara.
She stepped back, one foot steady, weapon raised and ready.
Agares lost balance as Rheys folded his wings, dropping too. But he caught himself mid-fall, channeling energy through Smokewillow, and flung a massive orb of light straight at Rheys.
Rheys had expected it. His legs stretched into a tail, whipping out to strike the orb. It went spinning into the forest, detonating with a thunderous boom that shook the ground.
Smokewillow shifted, turning into a crimson blade streaked with blue sparks. She swung it the moment Rheys lunged for her.
He didn’t dodge. He took the hit and surged forward, his hand snapping around her neck.
He lifted her with ease, choking off her air before slamming her back against a tree. The impact cracked like breaking stone. “You liar!” he roared, his voice raw and furious. “You said I’d fight Agares. You said if I killed him, you’d hold me, touch me! But now you’re helping him!”
His fingers tightened, rage twisting his face. “Fine. I’ll eat you instead. Then you’ll be part of me. And you’ll never help him again.”
His strength was so overwhelming that the bark splintered behind her as the tree groaned under the force.
Sylvara grabbed Rheys’s hand that was locked around her throat. Even while he squeezed, she stayed composed, her voice light and almost teasing. “Baby, eating me’s just going to crack your teeth. You couldn’t handle me even if you tried.”
“I can. I can handle you just fine.” Rheys licked the corner of his mouth. His grip tightened as he turned her head aside and leaned closer, his breath brushing her skin as he bared his teeth for her neck.
A blade caught the faint light, slicing through the moment.
