“It’s fine.” Agares cut her off, his voice calm but cold. “They’re egg-laying. After this round of military training, you should review your biology. Swarmborn lay soft-shelled eggs. Without a hard shell, their young are fragile.”

“Noted. I’ll make sure to catch up,” Sylvara said, stepping back a little. Her bargain-bin husband already suspected something, and now she was realizing just how little she remembered about basic interstellar

science.

Ahead of them, Rheys’s enormous black-boned wings stretched wide, several yards across, and a smaller pair of wings suddenly sprouted beneath them.

The small wings were lined with soft black fuzz, while the upper bone wings were joined by a thin, almost transparent layer of dark membrane. Under the glow of firelight, it shimmered faintly-ghastly and fragile, like a stripped chicken wing with nothing but skin clinging to the bone.

“Hand her over.”

From the neckless torso, Rheys’s new head emerged. Long black hair swayed in the still air, his face half- shrouded beneath the shadow of his wings. His voice was sharp, laced with a crazed pitch. “Give her to me, Agares. Do that, and I’ll let you live.”

The light orb in Agares’s palm flared violently before he hurled it straight at him.

The night cracked open with a roar as a lightning bolt tore through the sky.

A deep, rolling thunder followed, slamming into Rheys’s chest with brutal force.

His body convulsed inside the storm, his screams ripping through the air in agony.

Sylvara squinted.

She had summoned lightning before-blue lightning.

When it hit Rheys, it barely left a mark. But Agares’s lightning had him howling in pain. Why

Was his mutated fire-type ability stronger than she realized? Was hers just … pathetic by comparison?

Rheys screamed again, his voice raw. He gripped the gaping wound in his chest and pulled it open with both hands, tearing his own body in half.

From inside the broken shell stepped a new form.

He was dressed in a black military uniform that suited his lean frame. His long, dark hair flowed down to his legs. The enormous bone wings stretched behind him, casting a long shadow. His face was hauntingly beautiful-sharp, pale, and unnervingly feminine, his golden slit pupils glowing like molten gold.

“Wow, Your Highness, he’s stunning!” Sylvara said, awe spilling from her voice. She just saw something nice.

She hadn’t expected that. She’d pictured something monstrous, insect-like. But aside from those massive bone wings, with the smaller black ones fluttering beneath, Rheys looked almost ethereal-a fallen dark angel.

Agares’s frown deepened, his voice clipped and precise. “Ms. Feywin, the Swarmborn can alter their forms.

“What you’re seeing isn’t real. Their essence is still insect. It’s like the beast folk’s hyenas. Even when they shift into humans, they’ll always be hyenas underneath. Do you understand?”

Sylvara pouted, tilting her head toward Agares. “Sure, he’s the enemy, but come on-he’s gorgeous. We can’t just ignore that because he’s trying to kill us, right?”

Rheys’s beauty wasn’t like Aslan’s ambiguous charm or Jonathan’s flawless grace, and it definitely wasn’t like Agares’s sharp, dangerous edges.

His beauty felt broken-like a flower that fought its way through mud and filth just to bloom.

It carried madness and blood in its roots, the kind of beauty that terrified you yet kept you staring.

Agares’s eyes met hers, deep and steady. A moment passed before a faint smile tugged at his mouth. “You’re right, Ms. Feywin. He’s handsome. But the Swarmborn use beauty as a weapon. It’s how they lure Growers onto their plates.

“They use those faces to draw people in, to seduce their prey. Especially someone like you-a Plant Healer with pure energy. If they managed to seduce you, devour you, and create a new queen, they’d be hailed as heroes.”
