Chapter 84
Vanessa POV
*
It had been a long night, and when we arrived at breakfast, I was shocked to see the restaurant. The women there were still wearing pajamas and had curlers in their hair. I was in shock. I had put my hair in a messy bun and wore a pair of sweats. I thought I would not be dressed appropriately. But I was more dressed than they were. Alfred had reserved a table at the back of the restaurant. It was private, and we would not be interrupted. The lighting was low. It was a romantic setting. We enjoyed our breakfast. Everyone was looking at us and smiling.
There was one girl in the corner of the restaurant who did not seem to be happy. Alfred explained to me that it was Veronica’s sister. She was not going to cause issues because if she did, she would be in jail with her sister, who was awaiting execution. I felt bad for her. I did not know what kind of family she had left. Whether her parents were still alive or not. But I guess that did not matter. Right now, it is about Alfred and me. As we were walking out of the restaurant, Alfred stopped and talked to the cashier. I did not ask what it was about. I figured he would tell me later. We then got into the car. We stopped at a gas station and went in. He bought some snacks and drinks for the road. He said it would be a four–hour trip.
I made sure to use the women’s room. I didn’t want to get out on the road and needed to use the bathroom. Especially since I had no idea where we were going. I was told that we were going to his cabin in the woods for a few days to get a break from life in the pack and to enjoy each other’s company. As the Alpha and Luna, we are so busy with pack life that it is unreal. Day after day, night after night. While we were at the gas station, I thought I had seen someone messing with the tires on the car. About an hour into the drive, I began to hear a clunking noise outside the car. I knew that meant we had a flat. Chris Alfred’s beta and best friend get out of the car. Then you hear a struggle, and then everything outside the car goes silent.
Alfred gets out of the car. I grabbed his arm, shaking my head back and forth.
Baby, I have to make sure Chris is OK.”
I let go of his arm, and he got out of the car. I slid over and locked the passenger door. I then grab my shoes off my feet and brandish them as if they were a weapon. I don’t think a shoe is going to do much damage, but at least I can get a couple of hits in, and

hopefully Alfred can reach me quickly enough. The door opens, and Alfred drags Chris into the car. Alfred then locks all the doors.
Can you drive us out of here?”
No, little one, the tire is still flat.”

I don’t understand anything about cars. So I assume that he is correct. We sit in the car for an hour before someone stops to help. The road that we are on is well–traveled. When
someone knocked on the window, Alfred slowly rolled it down, and when it reached the point where he could see outside, he smiled. He greeted the person, and they had a brief conversation. Then they changed tires, and we were on our way. Chris was sitting in the back seat with me. The man who helped us. Henry is his name, I think. I did not pay
attention to what his name was when Alfred greeted him. But he did follow us for a little bit. I was so exhausted from not sleeping the night before, getting up early, and all the
excitement.
The next time I woke up, I was lying on a bed. There had been a light blanket thrown
across the top of me. We were at the cabin. I was so happy: I need to pee. I looked around the room and couldn’t find a bathroom. So I walked out of the bedroom. I did not even
notice my surroundings. As I was focused on not peeing myself. When I found the bathroom right next to the bedroom, I was thrilled. I went in and took care of my business. While I was there, I looked around the room. You could definitely tell that this was a bachelor’s cabin. The bathroom was camouflaged all over. It was clean. You could
also tell that there had been an effort to make sure a female was comfortable.
I especially loved the dark curtains. It blocked out the window completely. There was no way anyone could peek in on you if you were bathing. Also, the tub was huge. I knew Alfred was a big man. I came barely above his belly button. I could get lost in the bathtub. If you didn’t know any better, you could throw me out with the bathwater, to speak. It was freezing in the bathroom. I held my hand over the vent of the heater. No air was coming from it. I assumed that he had not turned on the heater. In the woods, surrounded by trees, and I believe we were also in the mountains. When I walked out of the bathroom, I went and sat down on the couch. There was a throw blanket on the couch. Even though a fire was burning in the fireplace, it was still cold.
I inhaled because I wanted to take in the scent of my surroundings. I wanted to submit it to memory. I could smell the scents coming from the kitchen, as well as the smell of fire burning in the fireplace. But I could also faintly smell rotting meat. It wasn’t a

particularly strong smell, but I could still detect it. I assumed that it was just the smell coming from outside. I did not notice any windows open, but the smell couldn’t be coming from anywhere. Alfred stuck his head out of the kitchen and greeted me. He informed me
that dinner would be done shortly. It didn’t matter to me when dinner was going to be
ready. All that mattered to me was that we were together.
We finally made it to the cabin and had some time alone. That’s what I thought. Alfred
came out of the kitchen. He went out behind the house. I didn’t know there was a basement. I stayed in the living room on the couch, where I would occasionally get up and check on the food. The last time I got up, I heard the front door open and close, and I thought it was Alfred. But when I got to the couch, it was not Alfred. Instead, there was a gray wolf standing in front of me.
