Nothing wakes me up faster than a sudden mind link from my Beta. Anything could be happening: a rogue attack, an invasion… so many things to worry about. This one though makes my heart pound harder than when I go into battle.

‘Zoey’s awake! Come quickly! Something’s wrong so please hurry!‘ Peter’s voice is urgent and fast. hurry out the door but not before alerting Daisy. She rushes after me and shoots me a look before I can even say anything.

Even though Olivia made Daisy come back home to sleep, she stayed on the couch and didn’t move from that spot. She knows it’s not good for her but her worry for Samuel and Skylar makes her irrational. I don’t blame her at all. I just hope this will shed some light on the situation at hand.

As we arrive at the house where Zoey’s staying, I feel a wave of anxiety coming on. Peter sounded very worried when he called us all here. What could be going on with Zoey? She’s awake so isn’t that a good thing? As I look over to my mate, I can tell she’s thinking the same thing I am

I take her hand and squeeze it gently. Daisy looks at me her eyes bloodshot from not sleeping well. “Stay positive,” I murmur gently. I’m telling myself this more than anything. She gives me a small nod and we head inside.

As we do, I hear a familiar voice coming from the living room. Looking inside, I blink seeing Zoey up and about with a cheerful smile. She hasn’t smied so brightly in many years, so it’s odd to see her like this. My anxiety only grows. She’s hugging little Ebony who looks stiff and confused. “You’re so big now! But I know you’re my pup!”

Confused by what she’s said, I look over at Olivia and my Beta. Both have a grim look on their faces. My heart sinks as I have a bad feeling about this. “What’s going on?” I ask deciding to hurry this along.

Peter watches mother and child with a frown. “… She believes she’s back five years in the past.” He says and looks at me. “She has no memory of what happened. I don’t know if it’s temporary or…” he trails off and sighs a frustrated look on his face.

I stare at him not knowing what to say. Is our one and only lead… all for not? I feel Daisy let go of my hand but I just search Peter’s face for any sort of answer. Why won’t he meet my eyes? Why does it seem like he’s guilty of something?

Before I can ask what he’s so guilty about, Ebony’s small voice speaks up. “M–mama… I–I’m not small anymore… I’m seven… almost eight.” I break my stare and look over to her and Zoey. “B–but… you saw the monster who took Sky so please… please help him…” tears come to her dark eyes.

Zoey only looks confused by this. “I don’t understand… I don’t remember anything like that… you were just two yesterday!” She pats the top of her daughter’s head and frowns as she starts to cry. “Ebony…” she hugs her close and shakes her head. “I’m sorry, baby girl…”

Ebony sobs and hugs her back. “I–I want Sky home! H–he protected me… I need him back!” I never knew how much the poor girl was struggling. My heart breaks seeing how broken up she is about this. Skylar must mean everything to her just as he does to Daisy and me.

Daisy walks over and kneels to pat her head. I know she’s shaken by the news but she’s a natural mother too. When Zoey was unconscious, Daisy used all the energy she used for Skylar on Ebony instead. She played her mother well enough to get them both through it even if it wasn’t perfectly.

I step back so I’m standing next to Peter. As his scent reaches me, I’m taken aback by how much of Zoey’s scent is on him. I look at him. “What happened, man?” I ask him. He still won’t meet my eyes. “What did you do? You rarely look guilty over anything so tell me.”

Peter swallows hard and looks out the window. “I… I came here to sit with her when she woke up… last night.” He admits. “She was acting so loving and sweet towards me… I was so happy she was awake too. So I…” he frowns deeply. “I…”

Zoey woke up last night and Peter didn’t tell anyone? I look back to Zoey and catch sight of something that wasn’t there before. On her neck is a bite mark… no way… I look back to my friend. “You didn’t…”

Peter sighs and rubs the back of his neck. “We were talking about it before so… I acted rashly…” his tone sounds off but he conues. “Zoey’s my chosen mate… I made it official last night… I was just caught in the moment and my emotions and…”

Before I can react, a flash of white appears in front of him. The next moment, Peter is falling back and slams against a wall. He grimaces and holds his bruised cheek while Daisy stands there her hand in a fist. “You b*st*rd!” She snarls low.
