The wife of the patient from the day before was covered in tears at that moment, pointing at Emily. She was also surrounded by a few reporters who were carrying huge cameras.
The camera flashes were going off, and all the lenses were pointing at Emily like guns.
"Dr. Sterling, you were late for your surgery yesterday, causing the patient to need a second resuscitation. How do you explain that?" asked a reporter.
"Rumor has it that you do not uphold the medical ethics, and you treat your patients' lives as a joke. Is that true?" asked another reporter.
Emily's mind went blank.
She looked at the woman who was crying her eyes out, then at the reporters around her who were filled with excitement.
What a way to twist the truth.
The woman rushed up to her, complaining while wailing, "It's because you were late! That was why Dr. Lancaster had no choice but to step in and perform the surgery!
"Because of that, something went wrong with the surgery! To make up for your own mistake and avoid being fired, you pretended to be concerned and performed the second surgery! At the bottom of it all, it was all because you were late, you heartless doctor!"
Emily put down her utensils slowly as countless cameras were aimed at her. Then, she stood up and straightened her back, looking as calm as ever.
She glanced icily at the woman who was still putting on a performance before she finally fixed her gaze on the lens of the reporter in the forefront.
"I wasn't late. The patient was wheeled into the operating room earlier than he was supposed to," she stated.
Her voice was not loud, but it was clear enough to echo through the entire cafeteria.
The woman immediately dropped to the floor, pounding it while bawling.
"You lied! You're still lying! My husband is still very weak, and it's all your fault, you heartless woman!" she shouted.
The chattering in her surroundings grew louder.
Emily was so mad that she laughed instead.
"It's very simple to find out the truth," she said slowly. "Pull the surveillance tapes."
The woman, who was still throwing a tantrum, stopped crying for a brief moment.
"The hallway outside the ward, the elevator, and the entrance to the operating room are all covered by surveillance cameras. The timestamps would tell everybody the answer about what time I arrived at the hospital and what time the patient was wheeled into the operating room," said Emily.
The woman's face turned bright red. The reporters looked at each other as well.
Mallory took the chance to pull Emily away.
Once they got to an unoccupied corner, Emily asked softly, "Mal, do you really have the video in your phone?"
Mallory grinned and replied, "No. But I have it in my email. I've also emailed you a copy. I rushed to the security department to get the videos as soon as the incident happened. Not only did I get the video of the surveillance in front of the operating room, but guess what else I saw?"
"What?" Emily blurted out.
Mallory leaned in mysteriously and said, "A video of Amelia bribing Dr. Lancaster. I've also made a copy of that too."
It was only then that Emily understood the full course of events.
That meant that Amelia was the one who broke the lock on her door. She did that to deliberately make Emily late, so that Jonathan could perform the surgery. She even had a backup plan, which was to get Jonathan to move the surgery time forward.
Fortunately, Mallory had gotten the evidence.
Once this video was made public, Amelia would drown in criticism even if she didn't go to jail.
