Besides, Damien had said it was just for a few drinks. Nothing would actually happen to Emily.
That thought was enough to ease Cole's mind. "Alright. You've got a deal," he said.
Damien chuckled in satisfaction. "I knew you'd come through. Bring her to the VIP suite at The Imperial Club, and don't keep me waiting."
Then, the line went dead.
Cole slid down the wall and onto the floor, his phone clattering from his hand. He gasped for air, his face wet with a mixture of sweat and tears.
What had he just done? He had sold out his own sister.
But he had no other choice.
A few minutes later, he pushed himself up from the floor. Then, after washing his face, he headed downstairs.
…
Emily was in the foyer, putting on her jacket with her keys in hand.
She looked utterly exhausted, her face pale and drawn from the sleepless night. In fact, the sight of her weariness sent a sharp pang of guilt through Cole.
"Emily," he called out, stopping her.
Emily paused and warily looked at him. She didn't say anything, but she figured he had to be up to no good.
Cole hurried over to her, putting on a sweet smile. "Why don't we grab something to eat together?"
Emily was taken aback. She must have misheard him.
Upon seeing her hesitation, panic flared in Cole's chest. He reached out and tentatively tugged on her sleeve. "We haven't had a meal together in forever," he softly said.
Emily's heart instantly softened.
It had indeed been a while since they'd last talked or shared a meal together. Their relationship had devolved into nothing but arguments and demands for money.
The Cole now who was making an effort to appease her began to overlap with the memory of the little kid who'd used to follow her around.
Perhaps he had truly turned over a new leaf.
The exhaustion from the sleepless night had left Emily emotionally drained, so her defenses were completely down. Upon seeing the desperate hope in Cole's eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say no.
Finally, she gave a slight nod. "Okay."
…
The moment they left, a black Bentley pulled up in front of the Sterling residence.
