Gabriel gritted out the words through clenched teeth. His eyes were reddened, and it looked as if blood was going to leak from them at any time.
"You haven't changed at all, Emily. You're such a cold-blooded realist, selling yourself for a second time all for the sake of money.
"Could it be that, in your heart, everything in the world is labelled with a price tag?"
Every word that he said was like a knife that stabbed into Emily's already battered heart.
Perhaps he was right for thinking that she was cold-blooded. If it wasn't for him and Maurice, she wouldn't have turned out this way. But she simply had no choice but to concede after being forced into a dead end.
However, from Gabriel's perspective, it was just more proof that Emily worshipped money above all else.
Emily found this incredibly laughable.
"Yes," she said as she took in Gabriel's bewildered gaze. "You're right, Mr. Holton. Since we're making a deal, we should follow the standard procedures, no?"
Her gaze slid downward and came to rest on Gabriel's clutching her chin. "Can you let go of me now? Or perhaps this is a free service that you offer when you're making deals, Mr. Holton?"
Gabriel narrowed his eyes. Then, he loosened his hold on her, as if he had been stabbed by her harsh words.
He stared at her.
He thought that he had won. He assumed that by being ruthless and forcing her into a corner, Emily would have no choice but to come crawling back to him to beg him for mercy.
However, she hadn't done any of those things. She didn't beg, and neither did she show any weaknesses. She had just calmly accepted this so-called deal of theirs, offering herself up to ensure the safety of the Sterling family.
She had turned all his revenge and threats into a cold yet equal exchange.
The thought of this caused Gabriel's initial feeling of triumph to turn into something that made him think of himself as ridiculous and laughable.
