The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 712

"Callum, what did you just say?" Cordelia's voice trembled as she asked again. "Mom didn't catch that."

"Mom, Blake... Blake's been killed! He's never coming back!" Callum burst into tears once more.

Cordelia didn't even hang up the phone. She leaned back against the wall, slowly sliding down, her mind a complete void.

How could this happen? What on earth had occurred?

Cordelia tried to get up, but her legs felt like jelly. It wasn't until a few girls from school passed by and saw Mrs. Haselwood that they helped her to her feet. Feeling utterly drained, she hailed a cab to take her home.

On the way, her thoughts started to come back. Jayson had been killed, murdered...

He wasn't her flesh and blood, and when he first came into their lives, he had a habit of swiping other people's stuff. But he had changed. Besides, kids that age don't really understand what "stealing" is. Jayson had become so considerate, sometimes even more so than Callum. She had forgotten that Jayson wasn't her own child; in her heart, he was just like Callum.

Wiping away her tears, Cordelia wondered, how could someone kill a child? Who could be capable of such cruelty?

Her emotions were all over the place.

When she arrived home, the police were there, taking statements.

Ronan was sitting on the couch. He glanced up at Cordelia as she entered, her face pale.

"Where's Blake?" Cordelia asked as soon as she walked in the door.

"Cordelia, try to stay calm. We've already taken the boy's body to the medical examiner's office at the police station. After that, they'll move him to the morgue," Ronan said softly.

Cordelia sank onto the couch. The morgue, a body... How could these cold, hard words be connected to little Jayson?
