The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 714

Cordelia didn't say a word, just gently patted Callum's shoulder to comfort him. Losing Jayson had left a deep void in her heart too, but she needed to stay strong for her son. Her eyes were red and puffy, evidence of the tears she was holding back.

As she walked down the stairs, she could hear Ronan in the living room, his voice tense with anger during a phone call.

“Escaped? Emigrated?” Ronan's voice was thick with frustration. “You let him slip through your fingers? What the hell were you doing?!!!”

He hung up abruptly, the sharp click of the phone sending a chill down Cordelia's spine.

When Ronan saw her, he motioned for her to sit on the couch. “Samantha’s gone,” he said flatly.

Cordelia, lost in her grief, barely registered the news. Jayson was gone, and nothing could change that.

Ronan squeezed her shoulder gently. “Don’t take it too hard. What’s done is done.”

She nodded, acknowledging his attempt to console her.

“You’re not going to school today. I’ll call in for you,” he continued, trying to offer some comfort.

“Jayson was doing so well... such a sweet boy, so close to me, so sensitive...” Cordelia’s voice broke, tears welling up in her eyes. She had thought of Jayson as her own, her heart aching with the loss.

Ronan just patted her back, offering silent support.

His phone rang again; it was Emerson calling about a drone project with the Yaning company. Ronan needed to head to the office.

“Big bro,” Emerson hesitated on the phone, “don’t take it too hard.”

Emerson assumed Ronan was devastated. After all, even though Jayson was adopted, he had been a part of their family for so long. It was natural to think Ronan would be heartbroken.
