The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 715

Cordelia sat in her quiet living room, her thoughts a whirlpool of doubt and confusion. How did she end up with a man as heartless as Ronan? Sure, Jayson wasn't his biological son, but the boy had been in their lives for so long. What could a child possibly do to deserve such cruelty? Why was Ronan so fixated on getting rid of Callum?

And then there was the matter of Ronan calling Jayson by the wrong name. It wasn't a crime, and there'd be no repercussions—legal or otherwise. Every parent mixes up names now and then. Besides, there was no proof Ronan knew about the killer lurking around at the time.

Cordelia tried to calm herself down. Maybe it was all just a coincidence. Maybe Ronan had simply slipped up, and the hitman had overheard by chance. Or perhaps, as the hitman claimed, he was just looking to kidnap one of Ronan's kids for ransom. Murder wouldn’t make sense.

Despite her attempts to rationalize, a nagging unease settled in her chest. A little voice in her head kept reminding her that she knew Ronan too well to ignore her gut feeling.

Later that evening, Ronan came home from work.

Cordelia wasted no time, "Callum said you called Jayson by the wrong name yesterday. Is that true?"

Ronan lit a cigarette, taking a slow drag. "He told you that? Can't do much about it. Your man's getting old. Names get mixed up sometimes."

He smiled at her—a smile that was more unsettling than reassuring, one she couldn't quite read.

"I overheard you on the phone this morning, really upset about Samantha running off. Isn't she the one who brought down Grant's company? Why are you so mad?" she pressed.

Ronan's expression darkened. "Samantha killed my daughter. Shouldn't I hate her? What, you think I should throw her a welcome party?"
