The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 721

When Emerson knocked on Ronan's office door, he found Ronan seated behind his desk, lost in a cloud of cigarette smoke.

The knock jolted Ronan from his reverie. With a gruff, "Come in," tinged with barely concealed irritation, he beckoned Emerson inside as if the interruption had derailed his train of thought.

Emerson walked in.

"Hey, Ronan, Mr. Gustav from Reykjavik International Trading in Finland is here. Do you want to meet with him?" Emerson asked. But noticing Ronan's distracted air, he added, "Everything okay?"

Ronan finally crushed his cigarette butt in the ashtray.

"Emerson, tell me, did I mess up?" Ronan's brow furrowed deeply as he looked to Emerson for some semblance of reassurance.

"What do you mean?" Emerson was clueless about what Ronan was referring to.

Ronan eyed Emerson, gauging how much he could confide in him. Finally, he spilled the beans. He told Emerson everything—from knowing about the hitman's existence to deliberately taking the kids to the mall, where security was tight, giving the killer an opportunity but no escape. He had even intentionally called Jayson by the wrong name. When Jayson was killed and the murderer was caught, Ronan had successfully engineered a case. A preventable event had been twisted into a grim reality by allowing the assassin's intent to materialize.

Emerson listened, lips pursed, not responding right away. He didn't know Jayson well, but he figured that any kid schooled by Petra couldn't be much good.

"So you set the wolf to catch the wolf, huh? Cordelia doesn't get it?" Emerson probed further.

"Exactly. She can't bear to sacrifice the pawn, only to release the tiger back into the wild. But once someone's got murder in their heart, they're bound to come back around," Ronan explained.

Emerson nodded, "Need me to play peacemaker?"

"In her eyes, I'm worse than a murderer now. It's no use," Ronan said with a wry smile. "Unless she comes around on her own, nobody can change her mind."

"So you're just gonna wait?"

Ronan spread his hands in resignation, "What else can I do? How are things with you and Daniella?"
