The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 737

Harold found himself at a cozy corner table in a charming, old-school steakhouse, thanks to an invite from Ronan. Ronan had picked out some reasonably priced yet hearty dishes, a gesture that didn’t go unnoticed. Harold felt a pang of guilt as he thought about his hidden feelings for Cordelia and how indebted he felt to Ronan.

Ronan effortlessly served Cordelia her meal, a habit he’d picked up since the whole Jayson incident. This was the first time they were eating together since then, and their easy rapport made Harold feel like an awkward third wheel.

After dropping Cordelia back at her dorm, Ronan insisted on driving Harold home, even though Harold kept saying he could just grab a taxi. The wave of gratitude Harold felt was almost overwhelming.

“Mr. Evans, how can I ever repay your kindness?” Harold asked, his voice tinged with sincerity.

“Still haven’t found yourself a girl yet? What’s the hold-up? Is there someone you can’t get over?” Ronan asked as he drove off once the light turned green.

Harold shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “It’s not that I haven’t tried; just haven’t found the right one.”

“What about Victoria? She’s a great catch. Or is there someone else in your heart she can’t compete with?”

Harold got the hint – if he didn’t find someone soon, Mr. Evans would keep harping on about it. To Harold, anyone who wasn’t Cordelia was more or less the same.

The wealthy have their peculiar ways; they don’t let others rest easy while they themselves sleep soundly. Ronan was generous, but he could be tough when it came to protecting what was his. A few pointed words from him were enough to make Harold blush.
